The Aesthetic Specificity of Virtual Reality
Short Abstract
This paper focuses on what makes Virtual Reality (VR), as a form of artistic media, special. That is, whether there is some feature –or features– of VR that no other form of art possesses, and which thereby allows specific possibilities for, and constraints on, artistic expression and representation. Although philosophical interest in VR has increased in recent years, this question has received little attention. We consider one possibility drawn from Tavinor (2021): perhaps VR’s aesthetic specificity lies in it exhibiting a unique form of twofoldness? In the first part of the paper, we consider and criticize this idea, arguing that there are phenomenological and psychological reasons to reject it. In the second part, we put forward our positive view, arguing that VR has two features that make it aesthetically unique. First, it allows for what we call otherworldly immersion: VR's capacity to transport users to worlds which are very different from the real world. Second, VR is capable of inducing Virtual Body Ownership (VBO) of bodies which are very different from human bodies.

Medium specificity is the view that the media associated with a given artform (both its material components and the processes by which they are exploited) entail specific possibilities for, and constraints on, representation and expression. As Carroll puts it, “The idea - which I shall call the medium-specificity thesis - that each artform, in virtue of its medium, has its own exclusive domain of development” (Carroll 1985; see also Carroll 2008). Medium specificity leads to aesthetic specificity: if a medium has unique features, it allows artists to elicit unique forms of aesthetic experience from their audience. For example, we might think that the aesthetic specificity of film lies in its presenting moving images to an audience, in the way that a photograph or series of slides does not. Similarly, and obviously, paintings have to be made from paint; if an image is made by means other than paint then it cannot properly be called a painting. The aim of this paper is to make some suggestions as to the aesthetic specificity of Virtual Reality (VR). What can VR do that entails specific possibilities and constraints on representation and expression?
One possibility is suggested by Tavinor (2021). Tavinor claims that VR, as a “fancy kind of picturing” - i.e., peculiar depictions - “adds something to aesthetic appreciation” (p. 104). That is, the aesthetic specificity of VR is contained in those moments in which VR directs our attention to the medium itself. According to Tavinor, VR, similar to ordinary 2D picture perception, allows for a single visual experience with two folds: a configurational fold representing the 2D surface and a recognitional fold representing the visual 3D scene. One of the things we appreciate about paintings is the way in which properties of the surfaces become salient - think of the thick and beautiful Van Gogh’s brushstrokes, for example. For Tavinor, our visual experience of VR can exhibit a distinct form of two-fold experience, and herein lies the aesthetic specificity of the medium.
However, Tavinor’s claim that VR exhibits twofoldness is implausible. First, because it does not seem, phenomenologically, as if we are having a twofold experience. Because of the way VR headsets are designed, the surface is not visible, and so does not constitute a configurational fold in which the representational fold is seen. Second, unlike 2D images, VR headsets are stereoscopic: they provide the viewer with both binocular and monocular depth cues: each screen displays a slightly different image thereby making the virtual world seem properly three-dimensional. A photo or painting on the other hand, provides conflicting depth cues: monocular cues specify that the scene we are looking at is three-dimensional, while binocular cues tell us it is just a flat surface (Niederée and Heyer 2003). In contrast, VR headsets utilize both binocular and monocular cues to convey information about the three-dimensional virtual world, rather than the two flat screens that display it. These screens are positioned too close to the eyes to be discerned individually, thereby creating a distinct phenomenological experience. Finally, VR is not only a visual medium: it allows for auditory (binaural) and tactile experiences.
Two features of virtual reality (VR) that one might think contribute to its aesthetic specificity are immersion and interaction. Immersion can be understood as the experience of a three-dimensional environment from a perceptual, egocentric perspective, where one inhabits the totality of the work from the inside. In VR, immersiveness is achieved through head-mounted displays and 3D audio, which together create a convincing three-dimensional environment. Interaction refers to the user's active engagement with the environment. Interaction in VR occurs through hand controllers and motion sensors, allowing users to manipulate and engage with the virtual environment. However, in and of themselves, these features cannot be what makes VR a unique artistic medium. Architecture, for example, exhibits immersion; the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, envelops visitors in a flowing design, creating an immersive spatial experience. Moreover, installation art is both immersive and can, on occasion, involve interaction (Caldarola 2021); 'The Weather Project' by Olafur Eliasson at the Tate Modern, with its giant sun and mirrored ceiling, immerses viewers and invites interaction, making their reflections part of the artwork.
Although immersiveness is not, in and of itself, sufficient to count as a VR-specific feature, we suggest that it underlies one way in which VR is aesthetically specific, which we might call otherworldly immersion. What we mean by this is that VR allows for immersion in worlds which are dramatically different from our own. For instance, in the VR application Gravity Sketch, users can manipulate physics to create and interact with objects in three-dimensional space, defying the conventional laws of gravity. Unlike architecture, VR environments can feature altered physical laws or be styled in an outlandish, cartoon-like manner. It might be argued that otherworldliness is not unique to VR, as video games and fiction can also present very peculiar worlds (e.g., the game Antichamber which features non-Euclidean spaces, and the novel 'Flatland' the story of which is set in a 2D world). However, this ignores the immersive aspect of VR. Unlike video games played on a TV or monitor, VR provides a sense of physical presence in a particular space. While both the VR and non-VR versions of Superhot: Mind Control Delete present 3D worlds viewed from a first-person perspective, the VR version offers a considerably more immersive experience, making players feel as if they are physically inside the game's environment. One of VR's aesthetic specificities lies in its combination of two features: the immersive experience akin to being in a physical place, similar to architecture, and the creation of environments that significantly differ from reality, similar to video games.
Whereas otherworldly immersion is a specificity of VR in virtue of its being a unique combination of features found in other forms of art, Virtual Body Ownership (VBO) is a feature entirely unique to VR. A sense of embodiment, that is, the sense of the VR user that their virtual body is their actual body, can be brought about by mechanisms such as accurate and responsive tracking, which mirrors the user's real-world movements in the virtual environment, high-quality visual feedback that makes the avatar's movements and reactions realistically sync with the user's actions, and tactile feedback through VR gloves or suits, providing physical sensations that align with the virtual experiences. The aesthetic specificity of VR comes from the fact that these techniques can be used to make VR users feel ownership of virtual bodies which are quite different from human bodies (see for example, Ahn et al. 2016). VBO therefore, allows for VR users to have a type of aesthetic experience that they would not encounter through other art forms. Moreover, as VR interface technology improves, the possibilities of body ownership will only increase. Finally, these aesthetic specificities complement each other. VR allows not only for the possibility of immersing oneself in an alien world, and doing so in a body that is not one’s own.
