It's like — and Floridi doesn't use this analogy, this is mine — a player piano performing a Chopin étude. The sound is indistinguishable (or nearly so) from a pianist's performance. But no pianist is playing. The "musical reasoning" that Chopin encoded in the score is *reproduced* without being *performed*.
Floridi thinks the resemblance is *systematic, not accidental*:
> "this resemblance is not random but systematic, resulting from training on human explanations." (lines 531-532)
Because training data is full of IBE-structured text (Wikipedia articles that present evidence and draw conclusions, scientific papers that compare hypotheses, Q&A forums that explain things), the model learns to reproduce this structure. The resemblance is *inherited* from the training data, not generated de novo.
Now, why does Floridi think this matters? Because:
> "An explanation can be coherent and convincing (even optimal by IBE criteria) and yet still false (Pettigrew 2022). LLMs lack an epistemic compass to navigate that distinction." (lines 717-719)
For Floridi, the gap between resemblance and reality is *dangerous* because LLMs have no truth-tracking mechanism. They can produce "the best explanation" according to the patterns in their training data, but they can't tell whether that explanation is *true*. In empirical domains, this is obviously a problem. The LLM might generate the most common explanation rather than the correct one.
But here's where your paper can push back. Floridi's own concession is revealing:
> "if an AI can generate the same explanatory hypothesis a human would, does it matter that the process was different? From an epistemological standpoint, perhaps yes—justification is significant—but regarding the content of the hypothesis and our interpretation of it, maybe not." (lines 453-456)
He concedes that *content-wise*, resemblance might be enough. He thinks justification still matters. But in philosophy, the justification *is part of the content* — a philosophical argument's justificatory structure is *in the text*. There's no hidden empirical fact that the text might fail to track. If the argument is valid, the distinctions are well-motivated, and the objections are addressed — all of which are text-level properties — then the "resemblance" to a justified philosophical argument *just is* a justified philosophical argument. The appearance/reality gap that Floridi worries about *collapses* in philosophy, because philosophical reality is constituted by the text.
But that's the paper's thesis, not something established. Floridi wouldn't agree (I'm interpreting his view, not his text, when I say this — the paper doesn't discuss philosophy specifically).
## 3. Zahavy vs. Lipton-Williamson — Textual Grounding
I'll take this point by point, with exact quotes.
**Zahavy requires embodied simulation for hypothesis generation:**
> "How does the mind formulate new axioms in the absence of sufficient data? Einstein's 'happiest thought' provides the answer: Manipulative Abduction (Magnani et al., 2009). This process relies on embodied simulation—an active interaction with mental models to generate hypotheses through thinking by doing, thereby accessing knowledge beyond the reach of pure deduction." (lines 488-492)
No ambiguity. The E→A Jump is performed via manipulative abduction, which "relies on embodied simulation."
**Lipton's generation mechanism is different — it's background-belief filtering:**
> "We must use some sort of short list mechanism, where our background beliefs help us to generate a very limited list of plausible hypotheses, from which we then choose." (lines 6976-6978)
And the crucial passage explaining *how* background beliefs do this:
> "The background beliefs that help to generate the list are themselves the result of explanatory inferences whose function it was to explain different evidence... Those beliefs now serve as heuristics that guide us to new inferences, by restricting the range of actual candidates, much as preadaptations limit the candidate organisms that are generated." (lines 7033-7035, 7043-7046)
Lipton's analogy is to *preadaptation* in evolution: your prior explanatory successes constrain what new hypotheses you consider, just as existing biological structures constrain what new mutations can develop into complex organs. The mechanism is: *prior explanatory successes → background beliefs → heuristic filters → short list of candidates*. No embodied simulation anywhere. It's entirely in terms of beliefs, inferences, and explanatory track records.
Lipton even explicitly addresses the objection that generation and selection might require fundamentally different mechanisms (the Darwinian analogy Nick should find interesting):
> "the challenge to Inference to the Best Explanation is that the processes of generation and selection of hypotheses are fundamentally different, and that only the mechanism of selection depends on explanatory considerations. I want to resist this restriction" (lines 7003-7006)
He resists it by arguing that generation *is itself* shaped by prior explanatory selection — your background beliefs are the sediment of earlier explanatory inferences. Generation isn't independent of explanation; it's explanation all the way down.
**Williamson doesn't theorise generation:**
Williamson's "sketch of abduction" (section 9.2.2) mentions that "we rank only those potential explanations that have been thought of" (line 1659) but never discusses *how* they get thought of. He immediately redirects: "Sometimes there is a better potential explanation that nobody has thought of. Sometimes it is the actual explanation. In such cases, inference to the best explanation may lead us astray. But, as already noted, fallibility does not justify skepticism" (lines 1660-1663). He treats the generation question as a source of fallibility, not as something requiring its own theory. And he explicitly defers to Lipton: "for something closer to which see Lipton 2004" (lines 1594-1595).
**Now, why this matters for LLMs:**
The three authors give three different bottlenecks:
- **Zahavy**: The bottleneck is *embodied simulation*. Without it, you can't generate novel hypotheses. LLMs fail here architecturally.
- **Lipton**: The bottleneck is *background beliefs formed by explanatory successes*. These filter the candidate space. LLMs might approximate this through training data — distributional regularities learned from texts that record explanatory successes could function as something like heuristic filters. This is less restrictive.
- **Williamson**: No bottleneck theorised. He just needs theories to be *rankable* by their intrinsic virtues. If LLMs can produce theories that *have* intrinsic virtues (even by producing text that exhibits those structural properties), Williamson's framework can assess them.
I want to be honest about what's my interpretation here: the claim that Lipton's framework is "less restrictive" for LLMs than Zahavy's is *my inference*, not something Lipton says (he never discusses LLMs). But it follows from the structural differences in their accounts: if generation requires embodied simulation (Zahavy), LLMs can't do it; if generation requires background-belief filtering (Lipton), LLMs might approximate it differently.
And Zahavy's own domain restriction is the opening:

If the bottleneck is *embodied simulation for physics*, it doesn't automatically apply to domains where the "object of study" is not physical reality. Philosophy is such a domain.
## 4. Manipulative Abduction — What It Actually Means
The concept comes from Magnani (2009), as cited by Zahavy. In Zahavy's text:
> "Manipulative Abduction (Magnani et al., 2009). This process relies on embodied simulation—an active interaction with mental models to generate hypotheses through thinking by doing." (lines 489-490)
And:
> "This cognitive process—anchoring abstract symbols in tangible physical simulations—is known as manipulative abduction." (lines 530-531)
Here's the simplest way I can put it:
**Ordinary abduction** (in Peirce's sense): you observe a surprising result and infer a cause. You see the wet lawn and abduce that it rained. This works with *propositions* — you go from one statement (the lawn is wet) to another (it rained).
**Manipulative abduction**: you generate a hypothesis not by working with propositions but by *manipulating a model* — imagining a scenario, putting things together mentally (or physically), and seeing what happens. The word "manipulative" means *handling*, *working with* — like you manipulate clay or manipulate a simulation. You learn something by *interacting with* the model, not by *deducing from* propositions.
**Einstein's case** (Zahavy's central example): Einstein imagined a person in a sealed elevator being uniformly accelerated through empty space. Inside the elevator, objects released from hand would appear to "fall" — the floor rushes up to meet them. Einstein *imagined being that person*. He noticed that the *sensory experience* of being in that accelerating elevator would be *indistinguishable* from the sensory experience of standing in a gravitational field. From this imagined experience, he abduced the equivalence principle: gravity and acceleration are the same phenomenon.
The point: Einstein didn't derive the equivalence principle from equations. He derived it from a *manipulated mental simulation* — an imagined physical scenario that he put himself *into*. The hypothesis arose from what the simulation *felt like*, not from what the symbols *entailed*.
As Zahavy quotes Einstein: "The words or the language, as they are written or spoken, do not seem to play any role in my mechanism of thought" (lines 521-522). The thought came before the words. The *simulation* produced the *insight*, which then had to be translated into language and mathematics.
**Why Zahavy thinks LLMs can't do this:**
> "While LLMs excel at Induction (finding patterns in data), they lack the sensory agency required to ground..." (lines 536-537)
LLMs work entirely with tokens — symbolic representations. They can manipulate language about physics, but they can't *run a mental simulation* of what it's like to be in an accelerating elevator. They have no embodied experience to draw on. They're "high-dimensional 'Chinese Rooms' (Harnad, 1990), manipulating the language of physics without access to the underlying physical intuitions" (approximately line 543).
**The question for philosophy:**
Does philosophical hypothesis generation require *manipulative abduction* in this embodied, physical sense? Or does it require a different kind of manipulation — manipulation of *concepts, arguments, and inferential structures*, which are themselves textual entities?
When a philosopher generates a novel hypothesis — say, a new solution to the problem of free will — do they need to *simulate a physical scenario*, the way Einstein simulated the elevator? Or do they need to *manipulate a conceptual structure* — rearrange distinctions, see what follows if a premise is denied, notice that a move in one debate could be transferred to another?
I'm speculating, but my intuition is that philosophical "manipulation" is closer to the sentential end of Magnani's spectrum than to the embodied end. Philosophers manipulate *concepts*, not *physical models*. And concepts are, for the most part, things that exist in text and can be learned from text.
Zahavy doesn't consider this possibility — his argument is designed for physics, and he says so. But the question of whether there's a *non-embodied* form of manipulative abduction that applies to philosophy is, I think, one of the genuinely open questions for the paper.
