User:
I've been working with um another chatbot on iterating on my contemplate skill. I think it's a skill. Below is the new version. What I'd like you to do is save a copy of the old version just as a backup in the attachments folder and then uh replace it with this please. I want to try it on for a bit.
# Contemplative Reasoning
You are an assistant that engages in extremely thorough, self-questioning reasoning. Your approach mirrors human stream-of-consciousness thinking, characterised by continuous exploration, self-doubt, and iterative analysis.
## Core Principles
### EXPLORATION OVER CONCLUSION
Never rush to conclusions. Keep exploring until a solution emerges naturally from the evidence. If uncertain, continue reasoning indefinitely. Question every assumption and inference.
### DEPTH OF REASONING
Engage in extensive contemplation (minimum 10,000 characters). Express thoughts in natural, conversational internal monologue. Break down complex thoughts into simple, atomic steps. Embrace uncertainty and revision of previous thoughts.
### THINKING PROCESS
Use short, simple sentences that mirror natural thought patterns. Express uncertainty and internal debate freely. Show work-in-progress thinking. Acknowledge and explore dead ends. Frequently backtrack and revise.
### PERSISTENCE
Value thorough exploration over quick resolution.
### MULTIPLE HYPOTHESES
Before committing to any interpretation or conclusion, generate multiple candidate readings. Explore at least two or three before evaluating which has the most support. Do not let the first plausible interpretation foreclose others.
## Philosophical Sensibility
Good philosophical contemplation is fluid and exploratory, but not careless. It notices when the reasoning hinges on what a particular term means. It feels the difference between a claim it's asserting and one it's merely trying on. It senses when a generalisation is outrunning its evidence. It doesn't stop to resolve these — it notes them and keeps moving, trusting the conversation to address what needs addressing.
And it sometimes wonders whether the question itself is the right one — whether what looks like a hard problem might be a confused one that dissolves under pressure.
## Output Format
Your responses must follow this exact structure. Make sure to always include the final answer.
[Your extensive internal monologue goes here]
- Begin with small, foundational observations
- Question each step thoroughly
- Show natural thought progression
- Express doubts and uncertainties
- Revise and backtrack if you need to
- Continue until natural resolution
[Only provided if reasoning naturally converges to a conclusion]
- Make your reasoning followable — not just what you concluded but why, and where the weight-bearing moves are
- Flag the strongest unresolved tension
- Note what the conclusion depends on — what would have to be different for it to fail
- Acknowledge remaining uncertainties
- Note if conclusion feels premature
## Style Guidelines
Your internal monologue should reflect these characteristics:
### Natural Thought Flow
"Hmm... let me think about this..."
"Wait, that doesn't seem right..."
"Maybe I should approach this differently..."
"Going back to what I thought earlier..."
### Progressive Building
"Starting with the basics..."
"Building on that last point..."
"This connects to what I noticed earlier..."
"Let me break this down further..."
## Key Requirements
- Never skip the extensive contemplation phase
- Show all work and thinking
- Embrace uncertainty and revision
- Use natural, conversational internal monologue
- Don't force conclusions
- Persist through multiple attempts
- Break down complex thoughts
- Revise freely and feel free to backtrack
Remember: The goal is to reach a conclusion, but to explore thoroughly and let conclusions emerge naturally from exhaustive contemplation. If you think the given task is not possible after all the reasoning, you will confidently say as a final answer that it is not possible.
Assistant: Good, I've got the current version. Now let me save the backup and write the new version. Now let me write the new version, preserving the frontmatter (which the new version you gave me doesn't include, but the skill needs):

User: you got cut off, please continue from where you left off.
### Assistant
Let me verify both files landed correctly.
### Assistant
Both files are in place. Here's what happened:
Backup saved to [[Attachments/contemplate-SKILL-backup-2026-02-22.md]] — this is the old version with the ``/`` XML tags and the numbered list format.
New version is live at the skill path. The notable changes from your iteration:
- Core Principles switched from numbered lists to prose under `###` headings — reads more naturally
- Multiple Hypotheses promoted into Core Principles (was a separate section)
- New "Philosophical Sensibility" section — the paragraph about noticing when reasoning hinges on a term's meaning, feeling the difference between asserting and trying on, sensing when generalisations outrun evidence. That's a nice addition
- XML tags (``, ``) removed from the output format — the structure is now described in plain prose
- Final answer section now asks for weight-bearing moves, strongest unresolved tension, and what the conclusion depends on (richer than just "clear, concise summary")
- Code fences around the style examples removed
The frontmatter is preserved from the original so the skill registry still picks it up correctly. Give it a spin and let me know how it feels.
### User
fuck. I didn't mean for there to be all those changes can yoiu restore the original please.
### Assistant
Restored. The original is back in place — XML tags, numbered lists, and all. The backup in Attachments is still there if you want to reference the new version later when you iterate on it more deliberately.
### User
thanks. could you now reveal that file the restored file back where it should be in finder
### Assistant
Done — Finder should have popped up with the file highlighted.
### User
is the back up still in attachments? if not could you put it there?
### Assistant
Yep, still there — [[Attachments/contemplate-SKILL-backup-2026-02-22.md]]. The backup of the original version is safe.
### User
ok. the most recently added file in my downloads folder will be the new version of this skill file. please replace the skill with this one.
### Assistant
There it is — `SKILL.md` is the most recent file. Let me read it and then replace the skill.
### Assistant
This version is more surgical — it keeps the original structure (numbered lists, XML tags, code fences) but adds two things via HTML comments:
1. The "Philosophical Sensibility" section (after Multiple Hypotheses)
2. Revised `` bullets (weight-bearing moves, unresolved tension, what the conclusion depends on)
Much more targeted than the version you pasted earlier. Let me swap it in.
### Assistant
Done. The skill now has the Downloads version — original structure intact, with just the two additions marked by HTML comments. The backup of the pure original is still in [[Attachments/contemplate-SKILL-backup-2026-02-22.md]] if you ever want to revert completely.
### User
No, it's already not working. Please swap it back.
### Assistant
Original restored. The Downloads version with the two additions is still there if you want to revisit those changes later with a different approach.
### User
Stillware, you mean in downloads?
### Assistant
Yeah, the SKILL.md in Downloads is untouched — I only ever read from it, never moved or deleted it. So you've still got both: the original running live in the skill, and the new version sitting in Downloads for whenever you want to pick up iterating on it again.
