The motivation — AI is already contributing to serious intellectual disciplines, so the question about philosophy is live — needs to come first. The physics case is the illustration, not the lead.
The sentence "Whatever we think about LLM cognition, AI systems are now producing work that meets the evaluative standards of serious intellectual disciplines" is exactly the kind of meta-commentary the voice profile tells me to avoid. It narrates the discourse rather than saying something about the subject matter. And "meets the evaluative standards of serious intellectual disciplines" is empty Latinate — it means "doing real work" and should say so, or better, should be shown by the example rather than announced.

If I instruct an LLM to reproduce the *Philosophical Investigations* word for word, and it does so, it has produced philosophy in some sense — but the sense is not an interesting one, since the model has contributed nothing that was not already in its training data. The thousand monkeys with a thousand typewriters would, given enough time, produce the *Philosophical Investigations* too; the fact that a text is philosophical tells us nothing about the capacities of whatever generated it if the generation was accidental. At the other end of the spectrum, if philosophy is not a body of doctrine at all but a practice of self-transformation — if what makes it philosophy is something that happens in the practitioner, something closer to therapy than to theory, as the later Wittgenstein is sometimes read as holding — then no text-generating system could do philosophy regardless of what it produces, because the question would not be about text in the first place. What falls between these extremes is the interesting territory: can an LLM produce text that is genuinely novel, non-accidentally structured, and assessable as philosophy on the basis of what is on the page rather than what is going on inside the system that produced it? I want to argue that it can, and that the argument turns on a feature of analytic philosophy that distinguishes it from the empirical sciences: the text is the contribution, and the discipline's evaluative standards are assessable from the text.
