1. Keep the current Williamson opening, but make it do one more step before moving to Zahavy.
The present opening already gives you Williamson’s intrinsic virtues, the unrestricted evidence base, and the mathematics analogy. I would keep that architecture. What I would add here, from current Section 4, is the thought that the philosophical corpus is the record of what has been thought of and retained. That lets you move from Williamson’s abstract account of abduction into the actual historical-textual record of philosophy without a jump.
2. Expand the current corpus paragraph into a proper sequence rather than a compressed assertion.
At the moment Section 3 says, in effect, that the corpus has been filtered by peer review and teaching, and then immediately says the model has learned the distribution. That is too quick. I would replace those current paragraphs with a fuller sequence brought over from Section 4:
peer review, citation, anthologising, and sustained attention as distinct filters;
a short caveat that the filtering is noisy, not clean;
then the claim that an LLM learns a distribution shaped by what survives those filters.
This is the part of Section 4 that is both more detailed and better written than Section 3.
3. Bring in the “latent structure” and grammar analogy here, not in Section 4.
Once the filtering point is properly stated, Section 3 should say what “latent” means. The useful material to import from Section 4 is the grammar comparison: the model need not have explicit rules for philosophical quality any more than it needs explicit grammatical rules to produce grammatical sentences. That gives Section 3 a cleaner account of how standards can be present in the model without being represented as explicit criteria.
4. Rework the Floridi reply in the first half of Section 3 so that it is actually earned.
Current Section 3 already says that what counts as “plausible” in philosophy is what scores well on Williamson’s virtues, but it says it too quickly. I would pull in the clearer Section 4 formulation here: statistical plausibility is relative to training data, and if the training data has been filtered for philosophical quality, then “plausible continuation” and “text exhibiting the relevant virtues” will tend to correlate. That is the place to use Floridi’s “zeroth-order abduction” line and then answer it, rather than leaving Section 3 with a compressed verdict.
5. A short Lipton insertion would help here.
I would not import all of the Section 4 loveliest/likeliest material, but I would import a compressed version of it. One paragraph is enough. The reason is that it gives you a clean conceptual bridge between Floridi’s probabilistic mechanism and Williamson’s evaluative virtues: in a corpus filtered for what is illuminating, elegant, and informative, the likeliest continuation will often also be lovely in Lipton’s sense. Current Section 3 does not quite have that bridge.
6. Start the Zahavy turn with Zahavy’s own restriction, not with your paraphrase of his view.
This is one place where Section 4 is plainly better than current Section 3. Instead of opening the Zahavy discussion by restating the Einstein / E→A picture in your own voice, begin with the concession and restriction from Zahavy himself: he allows deductive competence from given materials, and he says his proposal is tailored to the physical sciences. That lets the section turn to Putnam from a stronger dialectical position, because Zahavy has already narrowed the scope before you narrow it further.
7. Keep the Putnam material where it is.
I would not move that example. It is doing real work. It slows the section down and lets the reader see, rather than merely being told, what a textual thought experiment looks like. That part of current Section 3 is already doing the right thing.
8. Tighten the sentence that lists Mary, the Chinese Room, and Parfit.
I do not think that line is disastrous, but it is the nearest thing in the section to the kind of listy shorthand that the voice references warn against. One possibility is to keep Putnam as the worked example and compress the rest to a lighter gesture, or cut them entirely.
