Okay, here is a transcript of my co-author giving a presentation on, um, a paper we are writing, the Generating Philosophy paper. See the session file for details. Um, what I've attached to this, um, transcript Actually, no, sorry. I'll put in the Downloads folder two other things for you. The first is the version of the text from which he was working from, and if I can find them, uh, the slides as well. So they'll be the two most recently downloaded files in the, uh, Downloads folder. Okay? So they're here to help you, but what I want you to do is to create a new note, and in the new note, I want you to write out a cleaned up version of this transcript. Okay? This is by no means an easy task, but I basically just want the entire transcript cleaned up. So all of these weird transcription errors, and there are many, I want you to fix. With any luck, the slides and the p-- and the paper will help you out considerably with this. Um, please note that the first thing that happens is my co-author, Enrico, gives the talk, and then it goes to questions. The questions are Yeah. It's already playing an important role inside. So science are philosophers somehow, the pillars of human cult and in all this controversy whether whether What is produced AI is producing images or text? That seems to have interest in resemblance to work so far, but it's not true, it's not it's controversial.
Whether this can count as real once apart or not in science. On the other hand, it seems that there are important cases in which AI is already giving uh, relevant contribution to, to, to scientific research. Here, you can see some some example on, on this slide. And it's also in science.
It's also easier in comparison with both art and philosophy to to check whether what the AI is doing, is an important achievement or not. Because science is quite clear and that controversial success conditions. And so, uh, it's not so difficult to to evaluate the outcome of AI in a certain domain and, and to, to establish whether it counts as a, as an important contribution or not in philosophy, this can be done, but it requires clarification on what the success in philosophy is and therefore what philosophy itself is.
Whether we can count or no, or not contributions of the of land and generated, more generally, the philosophy as interesting or not depends. First of all, on An important division. In, in the conception of philosophy. So we have inhibited two approaches to philosophy. And I'm talking about philosophy even though I I I'm well aware that that Our especially our guest from from nice.

Is. Obvious and intuitive to say that philosophy is on the on the science side and not on the outside. And but I, I can see that there is attention in that in some tradition, especially in the so-called Continental, tradition philosophy is more considered as a kind of literature to, he's a sort of literous way of of making literature to not writing novels, so poets by writing philosophical text.
In that case, if it's a kind of literature the connection with the writer seems somehow constitutive of the work
Idea of this dog, is that if we adopt the practitioner Focus, A bronze. It seems very hard to say that llm can do laws because that's because they are not human, they don't have a relevant biography. They don't feel anything as far as we know. We at least for for the scope of this.
Okay, we we adopted the text option Pro so we I'm trying to see whether llm can do philosophy at least within this. Framework. Which seems to be more suitable to the A way in which llm future. But that's basically, The idea. And,
That's uh well there is another thing that is it's important to say is that there is a practise at least in contemporary philosophy which is blind review. Seems to suggest that philosophy is about tax and not about the philosophers. Otherwise it would be very odd to evaluate text and select which text to publish and which not on the basis of text alone while being where it is mandatory to ignore the the name of of the of the philosopher.
If the the, the the the life of the philosophy is so important. So for for the, for the, the identity of of the, you know, okay.
There is a the, so in this sense philosophy, if you adopt the text oriented approach philosophy, seems much closer to science than you are. Button. The the there is also an important difference is that if you also the science is often about discoveries and so it's about finding something that was already there.
But Discovering it and should Enlighten it, but there is sort of some counterpart in in, in the objective world That that maybe the target of science where According to, at least today this famous View of quack by Pine trophy is more about making arguments. So there is no prior reality.
The paper reports is more to to more to do with articulating Concepts. Offering reasons and end arguments. And so that that seems to to to all once we have the the common uh text base account. This is to introduce an interesting difference. On the other end, there is a another important analogy is that There are two virtues of Works booking science and and philosophy.
And one is, Likeliness. Which has to do is the, the probability of of Tracking the truth. It's sort of accuracy. An explanation is Being capable of tracking. Real facts. But there is also de loveliness feature which is more the related to to virtues such as Um elegance order and capacity of providing a deepest understanding if true if true.
But so that's conditional but in principle uh Every Theory might be true maybe not in our world but in another world. And so if it's true if we assume that it's true and we find that as true provide also a deeper understanding that ah a further feature of the theory besides being true and that's what what the amount to loveliness.
So in this sense we cannot say celebrities independently of weather and explanation is correct and in philosophy in science. Uh likeliestness seems to be even more important than loveliness because there are there are experiments measurements and so on. That's the, the main A test for the theory, but in philosophy is much harder to have an empirical test of theory and so it's often is loveliness which is the the relevant vf2 rather than likeness.
That's it's sort of consequence of this distinction between Discovery and arguement.
Well, this is a just a, a an example. In which a theory can be bought can be more Illuminating and another one can be less lovely less Illuminating more back independently of knowledge of the truth but it's just an example and and just keeping it for. I'm just skipping it for for to say what I want to to.
Property Bridge. What's the most most important is that often? Uh, what what? Make the value of a work of philosophy. Our features like elegance and unity. So a good theories that explains explains a lot of things with a, a small set of of Concepts and principles. So being not at all, namely, not having patches, just to solve particular problems that are better.
That little connection with the other parts of the theory. So having a small set of teddy well, connected principle that can explain the whole phenomenon and not just part of the phenomenon that you you have to add apart to explain the missing part of the phenomenon, the capacity to, to ending objections and drug distinction at the right places.
Some make our understanding of the subject matter deeper.
And, In, in this sense. Eh, there may be that's something that Like this and and firing all over the door about, in this sense, there can be progress in philosophy. We can try to get to also better geography than our our professors. What what is important is?
They they win. So they they achieved the the main of of play. So if philosophy is a sort of game of giving and asking for reasons, so far going to finding the best arguments or the best objection and it it llm are good in that. Since Archu denied that they are doing good philosophy, just like it would be hard to deny that.
The blue is playing good chess just because it lacks uh biography Consciousness and mental state. But so this the so far so good in the sense that all these things to to suggest that just as we, we can make science. Uh, we take the land. We can also make philosophy with Atlanta, but there are two challenges and that's what we are going to computer in the remaining of of the talk.
Has to do with abduction. Which is. The kind of, of Epistemic operation. That seems crucial to philosophy. So not not deduction from from. A series of observations, not deductions in general things before. But rather understand to find that the best explanation, even a certain basis of evidence and certain analogies to other domains.
And we can just struggle to find the principle that that make up all these letters explained in the more effective way. Thing that A person who was mentioned before, as I insisted a lot about vacuum in contemporary philosophy, and, especially mental, philosophies, or philosophy, that has philosophy itself, as it's on topic this The importance of abduction has been highlighted.
In particular Viking Williams. And more recently Luciano Flores and others. Question, whether Llm can do abduction. And again, they they say oh they seek to do something like a abduction because they are not seductive, they are. This is what the old artificial intelligence were rather deductive as principles and draw conclusion from principle.
But the llm doesn't come to work this way, but it's not in that device. And it's not just collecting cases. And then, uh, to looking for, for General laws is driving more bastards on recurrences of schemas and so they are somehow abducted in what they do. But to origin, others argue that they are not.
It's a sort of product that they call that zero folder, abductions or sort of inferted, the throat of abduction because what they do, oh, you know, that they are just looking for the the most probable next token. So there are not
Valuation of considering different system of principle and trying to see which is the one that best explains the phenomenon and llama are doing nothing of that. They don't care about system of principle, they just care about finding the next World. Next token, that is more probable. Given the the previous time, the previous tokens Right?
The model does not understand with an exponential need. And nevertheless, it produce tags that follows the typical phrasiness character of explanations. But again, that seems again a way of Uh, mistaking, the the centrality of tax with the centrality of of the procedure through which the text that it is produced.
So even though the process is different, is the text as the same abductive virtues explanatory virtues that are then as attacks could use to human abduction. You know, that seems enough to have a good piece of philosophy that because again, it's it's very important to distinguish the process in which the tax is produced from from the the epistemic import of
Yeah, uh, okay, yeah, that's that this. There is another another objection. We find more compelling than the 301 because this is order to the Florida. One is software than Others, but can still be resisted by relying on the distinction between text and procedure. Whereas, the this objection is this is an objection rises against the possibility of Le land to do science to be Innovative science.
And the, the author of the people is called, it's another, as you can see isabi with y mozabi, with I, which is a famous phenomenology. So it's it's a completely different person but it's interesting because the the objection has somehow a phenomenological core. So even the the original zombie with, I can like this objection.
My, my life is objection. Why he says that Einstein imagined himself inside a holding elevator, he simulated the sensations. End up duck said that gravity and acceleration must be the same say economy. So the, the, the famous Einstein's got experiment through which he arrived. His term-breaking Theory was not a logical exercise, conducing symbols but essentially one, conducive imagination.
So, even though the theory at the end, It's a matter of. Symbols equations, the way in which the only way in which Einstein could make this Theory was by imagining himself in a sensory way. So as a person by relying on sensual imagination or proposexual and thinking of himself as as being in an elevator and that was the key element that led him to to to to to conceive the the laws of motion in a completely new way.
And that's something that L cannot do because they don't have Sensations, they don't have sensitive imagination, they just manipulate symbols.
The conclusion that zabi draws is that maybe can do some physics because not all physics. But cannot do Innovative physics. Innovative science because there's certain kinds of innovative science. According require this sort of, uh, La sensorial experience. That is beyond the reach of artificial intelligence. His arguement physics, but This seems an arguement that can what even even can be even more and more, and more relevant for philosophy.
Because in, in certain areas of philosophy, it seems that is very important to consider what we feel. For instance, philosophy of mind is a lot about introspection sensation, what it's like to see colours, what you like to compare even Aesthetics when we discuss about studies and Childs. Who rely on Earth about intuitions about what looks like good art to us, what doesn't seem to be beautiful at all.
And some it seems that if
We accept for the sake of the arguement that the value of philosophy is not in the process of production of the test. It's in the test. It seems that without certain process that are available only to to conscious beings. Certain tax cannot be produced. So this is a stronger objection because it doesn't, it cannot be addressed just by relying on the tax process.
This stage But we we think that, uh, Uh, we we can resist this uh, this objections. And so first. Um, Yeah, there is a sense in which Again, we can find the the relevant feature. In the taxi set but that's again, it's more still an arguement against against priorities.
So the idea is that even if the llm comes to to have elegance unifications through statistical process and not through real objective processes, the abductive features of the of the text are enough to to make it a good piece of philosophy. And, Yeah, but that's what seems more. Red Bank to us, is that Can can make that by relying on an accumulated texture, right?
So that's even though the the llm lock um abductive skills because again a practise skills means being capable of comparing different theories and looking for the theory that best explain the phenomena De La stopped doing that. He's just doing next talking prediction, but he's doing ex-stopian prediction by relying on a purpose of text, that a well produced through abductive processes and add a lot of other visues.
So, the them can somehow find this explanatory relevant patterns because it can do a sophistic prediction on the basis of text attack. These features
By other epistemically, virtues, or at least have a tendency to an epistemic reality, which is result. And so, working on this Corpus of selected, text llamic, distribution of good explanations of a good adaptive explanation.
Yeah, we have we have some examples and it seems that in that case, even without embody simulation, llm can just rely on this Corpus of of good explanation, can find the right patterns of explanation and then can Extend this oblatively valuable patterns of explanation to other cases.
In this, we argue that the same thing can be can be done for the problem of the lack of first person experience. The lack of it's true. That the land doesn't feel anything in in an LLM, never have tried, never probably never took a debate or said, even if you put it's not feeding anything within the elevator.
It's not feeling anything in order any other situation. So as never had an experience of pain or pleasure of fear
A huge court of text in which human beings are told have described recorded their subjective experience. And so that the the llm can never sort of second hand. Subjective experience. Which can be as good as first-hand the subjective experience through the partners of of building theory that take into account.
Also the subjective efficients, That's that's basically our. Our idea is that even if the the arguement is that is the the most, uh, challenging arguement against the possibility of them to doing philosophy, Consider the fact that an alarm can Rely on on a data set in which subjective experience is sedimented that that will be enough to overcome this this problem.
So that's basically it. Our conclusion, thank you.
I think it it's going to show up. Uh let me see maybe if I if I stop the yeah if they are we have also other guests. Look at the. Okay, we're doing with two questions. Um, the first is, what would you say if Adeline would be trained, every book every year?
No, every day. Uh, by January You want me to answer? Can you put the microphone on many people? I I think I heard that though. Can you hear me? Okay. Um so and the question was, what do you think would happen is if we specially trained an llm to do philosophy?
Yes.
I have been thinking about this so I wouldn't say it would be I wouldn't put it in terms of a philosopher training, it everyday. But I do wonder whether you could make a Analytic philosophy, specialised llm by Being very selective in the Corpus and in exactly how you're doing.
Reinforcement learning afterwards as well. Is there anywhere close to the question? You asked apologies, if not Yes, it is. Yeah, it's maybe as if I can ask something. It's, it's, uh, in a sense. It's what we're already doing. In the sense that in using llm, we, we upload our papers and we try to to, to, to, to train the llm, in a sense to do philosophy in the way we do, uh, and that may count, they seem to have a strong potential for charging TV, for support a strong potential, also, for for configuration.
So even though they they, they, they get
There is a way of trying to force them to focus, only on certain specific tags, especially within a conversation, they focus on the text that are allowed that within the conversation. And so that's maybe, uh, if a philosopher every day use chargeubity upload, the papers one is reading the paper.
One is writing in a sense. It's sort of creating a sort of Avatar of oneself, who is doing philosophy, more, and more, in the way a person was doing.
About peer reviewing. Uh, is increasingly made by AI today. So what do you think about that? Is it a, a deception? A frog. So what what is being created today? I couldn't hear the beginning. So what's made by AI? I'm sorry.
I mean, I don't know what Enrico is going to say about this. Ultimately, the person who is supposed to be doing the peer review is responsible for what comes back. Okay. So I wouldn't say let's just put that all over the llms on the other hand. Yeah, an llm is perfectly capable.
If prompted right to give in my opinion, give somebody very good feedback. Um, their paper. Okay, thank you. In principle the the final scenario may be one in which the element is bought bright in the papers and then making the the review but it seems apocalyptic, it seems. But on the other end it's just like uh a very good uh llm play chess one against the other.
So and just just to follow our modern, Rico just said there as well. If going back to what he said at the beginning of the presentation. If you do, subscribe to this text-based version of philosophy, and I think we kind of do most of us here, at least the analytic philosophers do then, and you, and you, and then, if you take that, and you also believe that
And if we can make elements do philosophy well. Why not? Just for the sake of philosophical progress? Turn it all over to the llms eventually. This is okay.

Okay, yeah, no problem. Uh, I can just summarise the question, maybe and then because it's I think it's a question that you can can answer better than me. It's a it's about the how much bad there is a lot of bad philosophy. Uh, on the internet. So any such question was, uh, if In the data set, there are so many pieces of students philosophy.
Maybe not just bad but just naive just not elaborated enough. How much also uploading pieces of good philosophy or the PC in a scenario, in which the pieces of grafiosity are a minority, okay? And there is a, a majority of of bad or just mean philosophy. How? This explanatory abductive virtues can can be preserved.
Nevertheless. Okay, good. Very clear. Um, First, the first thing, which is maybe a little bit of a cheat, which is these days. Apparently, the people who make llms are very selective in the Corpus that is being fed into the llm and the initial stages. So, Maybe there were people in the room who know better than me, but I'm pretty sure something like a crappy.
Uh, undergraduate student essay isn't going to be in the Corpus. Okay. Secondly. What I think a better way of thinking about this would be Would be. The llm. Is so the the way the arguement we've tried to make would work is that The llm by being exposed to all this data and being being trained up is being exposed, not just to a load of text but being exposed to a load of theoretical virtues.
So it's learning that when particular words in a philosophy context are used in a particular order. More often than not, it will have other words that come after them. So what I'm trying to get at is it's we don't need to sort of train on 10 million philosophers, so much as train them to be respecting the way logical.
Sorry philosophical arguments go or even logical arguments go. Okay? And I I'm sort of what would be written in the literature as a good philosophical move versus a bad one or versus a particular sort of sort of counter. You might make to a philosophical move and if you're thinking about training for things more specific like that then I don't think we need to worry about.
Yeah undergraduates
The question was online. Thanks. Um. I guess I have a couple of questions related to the abduction objection. And you reply to it, so it might be related to what it is. Just ask. Um, So when you present it in the object, so the first would be something like this.
But when you presented the objection, um, Is, I guess you said something like about. It seems to be focused on the process rather than You know, the final output the the text that is produced. Yeah. I mean, I see the the point of the reply, but I thought that one could say that well, but The process might still be relevant because sometimes the way in which we get An epistemically valuable output.
Is also relevant for justification purposes, right? So, this is for example, the point of reliabilism in epistemology, right? So, so it it doesn't just matter, the final output or the belief that is produced because that might just happen to be knowledge by luck but also the the way which we get there.
Uh, Could I jump in there before you get to the second? Yeah, please. Um, This is maybe something we should have been a bit clearer about is the example, we give at the beginning with deep thoughts and the 42 being the answer. At this point, when at least I wasn't envisaging it like that, I was going to envisage it as more like, um, You would get a whole philosophical arguement from these things.
Okay, so you are getting, you're not just getting an answer, you're getting the steps of an answer, okay? The the reasoning up to it. I mean, I don't know about you, but when I'm using llms to do philosophy, I'll I'll sort of say little things like reason, before you give me a final answer.
And so that forces it to go this step, this step, this step, this step Um, I thought I had something else to say but maybe I've forgotten it. Yeah. I mean like I guess that I just wanted to say that this this might be something to Vlog there because but Okay, but now I'm moving to this, okay, the second part um, So, but then like in in the next section of the talk, you gave, Your full-fledged answer right to the to the objection.
And then he said well, but it seems that after all Ai systems, they are capable of performing abductions, right? Because they're trained on a large purpose of text. And so somehow, they learnt how to select You know, properly out of that. But again here, I mean I'm just playing that there is Advocate here.
Yeah I see the spirit of the reply but I'm just trying to figure out uh I was wondering whether one couldn't push back here and say, yeah, it's capable of performing abduction but at the wrong level. So so what what they're able to do is adapting on a purpose, to produce a text, but what you would need is abduction on the content that that tax talks about and that transition isn't justified.
If you're basically locating abduction at the wrong level or you're just in very tax deduction I mean contact attraction from tax abduction. Okay that's that's the that's the thing. Okay good so I think I think you can probably anticipate the shake of my response here.
Interesting about it. So, a problem that I've been thinking about, which is this, which is not the same as the one we've been thinking about today, which is about Physics and in particular sort of folk physics and llm's understanding of folk physics. And a lot of people will say well, what llms lack is something called a world model.
Okay, they haven't really they're not interfacing with the external world or the corporeal World itself. All they're ever doing is text, okay. So they've never seen a ball fall to the ground and bounce. But they've they've just got loads of text about balls. Falling to the ground and bouncing, okay?
And I think, in that case for physics, if you wanted to talk about like the fine grainness of observations that you see, in the world of exactly how things, I don't know, how balls bounce across the across the pavement or something like that. It seems to me, you probably would need the fineness of grain of a world model of being able to represent these physical objects in moving through space, okay?
But with philosophy, I would say a large proportion of philosophy. I don't think that sort of fine-grainedness is needed. I see. So I would have said that the issue there is about understanding after all. So You know, we really don't know this abduction. Seems to be just. I mean, the point is whether abduction is performed and understanding or not and While that might not be a problem in generating, a text in the right way.
Because there's syntax because there's some issues that I'm not sure both exactly sort of understand when it comes to the content of the text. Then, you know, Uh, if you might just be know what you're talking about to evaluate features of the explanations. That's, that's what I would say just is, you know, so I'm not sure it's a matter of Finance grade here, but like more, Understanding what we're talking about, but that's like the standard objection to it, so, it's not very interesting.
Anyway, I had one more example, perhaps very quickly. Um, Stuff I used to do on auditory perception. I was always struck by the fact that philosophers who interested in sounds. They always disagree about where the sounds are particulars or properties of objects or events, okay? Thought this was weird compared to colours because although you can disagree what the colour is philosophically.
Everyone agrees that colours, at least look like they're along the surfaces or objects, right? It seems to me that if an llm would also be able to know or at least give you answers entirely consistent with colours being along the surface of objects Infusions object. Despite never actually having seen an image, sorry seen an object with colours infused on its surface.
Okay purely? Because of the regularities in the text. Clarity in the text between sound as a property and sound as a particular. I suspect it would be quite easy to confuse it. If I if I felt like it
