It doesn't need to illustrate the full likeliest/loveliest divergence β the section's argument runs on the concept of loveliness, not on the divergence. What it needs is: a clear statement of what loveliness IS (the subjunctive assessment, the connections, the intelligibility) and a concrete case that makes this vivid. Your own inline comment says "the example should be used earlier."
Here are three versions. Each handles the relationship to Semmelweis differently.
Version I: Explain loveliness via the subjunctive question. Keep Semmelweis as a separate, developed paragraph.

Three things to note.
First, all three versions now state what likeliness is accurately: a measure of warrant, how probable given the evidence, how well-supported. No more "surviving tests" or "telling us that something is the case."
Second, all three give the reader positive content for loveliness: connecting what had seemed unrelated, tracing a contrast to a specific difference, showing why the phenomenon has the shape it does. This is drawn from Lipton's own characterisations rather than from abstract restatement.
Third, the relationship to Semmelweis differs. Version I keeps the two paragraphs separate β this one explains, Semmelweis illustrates. Version II merges them β the illustration IS the explanation. Version III is the lightest touch β cut the problem material, add one concrete sentence, keep the structure.
My sense is that Version II is the strongest because it does what your inline comment asks for: it brings the example into the paragraph so the reader grasps the concept through the case rather than through abstract restatement. But it requires reworking the Semmelweis paragraph, since the material would have moved up.
