If philosophical quality is largely visible in such articulated forms — in what gets said after an objection, in whether a distinction holds under pressure, in whether a proposed view can accommodate the cases it needs to accommodate — then learning the patterns that result from the standards may be sufficient for a good deal of philosophical work, even if the standards themselves are not possessed in any deeper sense. Floridi et al. may therefore be right about mechanism and wrong about what that mechanism can produce in this domain.
Lipton's distinction between actual and potential explanation is also relevant. IBE, on his account, is Inference to the Best *Potential* Explanation — not inference to what has already been shown true, but inference to what would, if true, explain the phenomenon well (2004, pp. 57-58). LLM outputs are, in the obvious sense, potential explanations. They are proposals, distinctions, argumentative developments — possible ways of organising a problem. A philosophical move that really does expose a weakness in an objection or bring a phenomenon into clearer view does not cease to have that property because the route by which the sentence was produced is unusual. If the move is there in the text, it is there to be assessed.
One may still insist that the model has only inherited the results of other people's evaluative labour. The standard is borrowed, not possessed. The objection has force. Consider a student who has never conducted an experiment but has read every published paper in a field. Her sense of what counts as a strong explanation may be excellent because it has been formed by the results of other people's experiments and evaluative judgements. Even so, one may feel that something second-hand remains: her judgement is parasitic on labours she has not herself performed. In empirical science, that feeling bites hard, because the reason a standard works may depend on features of the world — on how acids behave, on what happens at certain energies — that the literature does not exhaust. Philosophy is different in a respect that matters here. The reason simplicity counts in favour of a philosophical theory, the reason ad hoc repair counts against one, the reason explanatory unification is valued — these are themselves argued for in the philosophical literature. Williamson's defence of abductive method in philosophy belongs to the same body of writing as the theories whose abductive credentials it assesses. The model is exposed not only to texts shaped by the standards, but to arguments about why those standards should govern philosophical judgement. The standards, in philosophy, are part of the corpus rather than external to it.
Floridi et al. themselves come close to admitting as much:
> "If an AI can generate the same explanatory hypothesis a human would, does it matter that the process was different? From an epistemological standpoint, perhaps yes — justification is significant — but regarding the content of the hypothesis and our interpretation of it, maybe not." (2024, p. 12)
In philosophy, that concession opens more than Floridi et al. allow. Blind review already embodies the same thought in practice. When a referee assesses a paper, she assesses the arguments on the page. She does not reconstruct the cognitive history of the author to determine whether the insights were arrived at through genuine abductive leaps or through patient pattern-matching over the literature. She cannot and need not. The institution of blind review presupposes that philosophical quality is assessable in the text — that the quality of the argument does not depend on facts about its production that the text does not reveal. If this were not so, blind review would be incoherent as a method of quality control.
Lipton makes a related point in discussing the relationship between Bayesianism and explanatory reasoning:
> "Arguing that Inference to the Best Explanation is wrong because Bayesianism is right is like arguing that thinking about technique cannot help my squash game because the motion of the ball is governed by the laws of mechanics." (2004, p. 108)
The comparison fits the present case. To describe an LLM's output as the result of stochastic prediction is to give one true description of what is happening. It is not to show that no other description is legitimate. Gaut's observation about chess applies here too: Deep Blue's moves were, in his phrase, "the epitome of an uncreative way to play chess," but they were objectively strong moves (2010, fn. 23). A passage may handle an objection well, overreach in a distinction, or leave a subject in clearer view. Those are not rival descriptions of a different event. They are assessments of the same text at the level at which philosophical prose is ordinarily read, taught, and evaluated.
None of this yields the absurd conclusion that every LLM response to a philosophical prompt is good philosophy. Generic prompts often produce generic continuations. Hedging, survey, and boilerplate are easy resting points in philosophical prose — they are, after all, among the most probable continuations in a broad corpus — and models find them often enough. The virtue-filtered corpus thesis does not claim that every output will be philosophically accomplished. It claims that the resources for philosophical accomplishment are present in the model's probability distributions because they are present in the training data, and that these resources can be accessed under the right conditions. When they are accessed, the resulting text is available for the same kind of evaluation that any philosophical text is available for. That fact does not rescue the stronger Floridi line. It shows only that the quality is latent: not expressed in every output, but not absent from the model's repertoire.
The mechanistic description remains true. It is simply not exhaustive. Another objection remains, however, and it goes deeper. Everything we have said so far concerns the process by which philosophical reasoning is conducted and the formal shape of the arguments that result. But philosophy may depend, at points that matter, on starting materials that are not available in a corpus of articulated language — on contact with the world that cannot be reduced to propositions already in print. If philosophical thought requires inputs that lie outside the space of what has been written down, then the virtue-filtered corpus argument is beside the point: the quality of the reasoning may be impeccable while the foundations are missing.
