The more interesting discovery from the prior research note is that **Agents of Change** and **Beauty in Use** may be more substantively relevant than the application hub initially assumed. The strongest conceptual material seems to be:
- **Agents of Change**: agency, attention as mental action, source-experience, temporal/narrative structure.
- **Beauty in Use**: agentive phenomenology in human-artifact interaction, effortlessness, designed objects, chromatic illumination.
- **Chromatic illumination**: possibly the best bridge to flourishing, because it gives a way to describe how sociotechnical systems can preserve outward action while altering the background values, purposes, and long-term ends that make action part of a flourishing life.
**Current Risks / Gaps**
The notes are very honest about the weak points:
- No strong prior track record in transdisciplinary co-creation methods.
- No established work in flourishing ethics as such.
- Systems thinking needs real uptake, not decorative vocabulary.
- Current centre of gravity is aesthetics/AI rather than ethics of technology.
- CV still needs finalization.
- Referees need confirming.
- Course evaluations need locating.
- Publication sample page count needs checking.
**My Read**
The application should probably be built around the **attention economy / workplace well-being** side only after more thinking, with *Agents of Change* and *Beauty in Use* doing the philosophical work. *Growing the Image* still looks like the best publication sample, but it should not be forced to carry the attention-economy argument. It fits better as evidence of philosophy of AI/technology competence and as a generative-AI co-cultivation angle.
No drafting yet. The next useful move is a proper consolidation pass on Dennis/Bombaerts/ESDiT vocabulary, then choosing the research-plan angle deliberately.

The Gmail endpoint wants the raw RFC message as JSON, and the only problem is getting that large JSON body into `gws` without stuffing it into a giant shell argument. I’m checking whether `gws` supports file-backed JSON input.

Understood. The viable non-Mail routes are: direct Readwise/Reader import if the CLI supports it, or Gmail via `gws` once I can feed it the message body correctly. I’m checking the Readwise CLI implementation for file/stdin support before using any weaker workaround.

The clean fallback is to let Reader import it from a temporary Drive download URL: share just this EPUB long enough for Reader to fetch it, create the Reader document, then remove the public sharing permission. I got it working by avoiding the “email an attachment” route in the end.
The problem was that the usual helper script for Readwise does this:

That failed because the helper builds the whole email, base64-encodes the EPUB, then passes the entire encoded email as a single `--json` command-line argument to `gws`. For this EPUB, that made the argument too large:

I also tried the lower-level Gmail upload path, but `gws` sent the upload as `application/octet-stream`, and Gmail rejected it because the Gmail API wants an RFC822 email message, not an arbitrary binary upload. Mail.app was also the wrong route, as you pointed out.
What worked was using **Readwise Reader’s direct document import**, with a temporary Google Drive download URL:

- Drive permissions are back to just your account.
- Readwise Reader has the EPUB in `later`, category `epub`, with the three tags.
So the trick was: **don’t send the EPUB through Gmail at all**. Briefly expose the Drive file, let Readwise fetch it as a URL import, then close the Drive permission again.

I’m going to check the existing Readwise instructions on both Codex and Claude sides, because this should probably be a cross-runtime fix: Claude was the one that got stuck, and Codex should avoid rediscovering the same workaround later.

It should **not** be done every time. It should become the preferred path for a specific class of cases:
Use the **Drive temporary-link → Readwise Reader import → remove permission** method when:
- the file is an **EPUB or PDF**
- the file is already in **Learning / Google Drive**
- the Gmail attachment helper fails or is likely to fail because the file is large
- the user wants it in **Readwise Reader**, not merely emailed somewhere
- Mail.app is irrelevant or unavailable, as on this machine
Use the old **email-to-Readwise** method only when:
- the file is small
- it is not already in Drive
- the Gmail helper works cleanly
- there is no need for Reader metadata/tags/location handling
The important distinction is this: the problem was not Readwise. The problem was the local Gmail helper. It constructs an email with the attachment, base64-encodes the whole thing, then passes that giant encoded message as a single `gws --json ...` argument. That can hit the OS argument-length limit. So “email it to Readwise” is conceptually fine, but **our current helper is fragile for EPUB/PDF attachments**.
I’d update the `readwise` skill on both Codex and Claude with a decision tree like this:

- Do not export OAuth tokens to work around `gws`.
- Do not leave Drive files publicly shared after import.
- Do not assume `reader-create-document --tags` worked; verify or add tags afterward.
### Gmail Fallback
The email-to-Readwise helper remains acceptable for small files, but for large EPUB/PDF attachments it may fail with `Argument list too long` because it passes the full base64 encoded message through a command-line argument.

The reason the attention and agency stuff is good—because it seems to link up well with the interests of the PIs of this project—and the AI‑LLM stuff, because that’s a current interest, so it’s easy to bring into my current work.
