## Memory Rules

**Stale / Provisional**
The normal session note says the `towards 8k cuts` project had “one section” as of 2026-05-08. That is now stale. The same note’s warning remains important: its planning content is provisional and should not be treated as settled structure.
Section 5 explicitly begins with a note saying it has not really been worked on yet. Section 4 also has a note saying the language from that point on has not been checked, so I’ll treat its prose as rough even where its argumentative shape may be live.
**Source Anchor**
The Learning folder is concrete and usable as the source base. I verified it contains `00 - conversion manifest.md` plus 29 markdown conversions, including `metasemi` and Elizabeth John’s review of Abell, which I added to the Agent Vault as a small source-context correction.

- Attraction: certain words, frames, tones, genres, or concepts pull related material after them.
- Mode stability and drift: the output can enter a register or explanatory form and either sustain it, intensify it, or lose it.
- Surface intelligibility: the order must be visible in the output as text, not hidden exclusively in weights or activations.
That last point matters. If the explanatory story does not connect back to appreciable features, it is bad Carlsonian machinery. Mechanistic interpretability may explain something real about the model, but unless it helps us see something in the text, it is not yet the right guide for aesthetic appreciation of outputs. The knowledge has to mediate perception.

I think it enters after the growth process, not as the light in Olah’s quote. The model is trained into an organized system; then post-training and deployment shape how that system appears in interaction. The assistant role is a further shaping of the grown system. It is not the original light, but it can be understood as a later orientation imposed on the model: a way of making the model’s continuations take the form of replies from a helpful interlocutor.
So the second salvage move is:

This is more delicate.
We could say: in Olah’s original image, the light is the training objective. In the deployed chatbot, there are further shaping pressures: instruction tuning, reinforcement learning from human feedback, constitutional training, system prompts, interface conventions, and the “assistant” role. These do not make the model a person. They make its continuations arrive under a person-like aspect. That is why person appreciation becomes tempting.
This lets the paper keep Enrico’s thought that the “light” somehow calls for person appreciation, but with a correction. It is not Olah’s pre-training light that calls for person appreciation. It is the assistant-facing shaping of the model that makes person-directed appreciation tempting.
The structure would then be:
1. Olah’s quote gives scaffold, light, and growth.
2. Scaffold and light are design-side conditions.
3. Growth is the emergent trained organization.
4. Once the grown system is post-trained and deployed as an assistant, its outputs acquire a person-like profile.

That seems stronger than the direct mapping.
The paper could say, plainly: Enrico’s “light” thought is right if it is moved from the pre-training quote to the later assistant role. The light in Olah’s quote is not the assistant persona. But LLMs are not encountered by users as bare pre-trained next-token predictors. They are encountered through systems shaped to answer as assistants. That shaping creates the person-like appearance. It explains why the person section belongs in the paper.
This also helps with your existing Section 3. Section 3 already says post-training helps explain why the generated continuation can seem like a speaker’s reply. That is exactly the place to connect Enrico’s point. You do not need to say “light = person appreciation.” You can say: the design-side light explains one kind of directionality in training; post-training adds another kind of directionality, one that presents the output under an assistant-like form. That assistant-like form motivates person-directed knowledge as a candidate, but Section 3 shows why it still does not work.
There is another possible rescue.
The paper could treat the scaffold/light/growing triad as a sequence of failed reductions.
First reduction: LLMs are artifacts, so appreciate them through design. Olah gives support for this because there is a scaffold and a light. But the quote itself prevents a pure design reading, because the thing of interest is grown.
Second reduction: LLMs are like organisms or agents, so appreciate them through person-like categories. Olah’s phrase “almost biological entity or organism” invites this. But the quote itself also prevents a literal person reading, because the growth is computational growth under an objective, not the development of a life.
Third move: order appreciation. The grown organization is produced by a process. It is neither directly designed form nor personal expression. This is exactly the sort of object for which order appreciation is useful.
This version uses the Olah quote dialectically. It says the quote pulls in two wrong directions:
- scaffold/light pull toward design appreciation
- biological/growth language pulls toward person or organism appreciation
But the correct lesson is neither simple design nor personhood. The correct lesson is process-produced order.
That is very promising because it does not force the terms into a bad map. It lets the quote generate the dialectic.
The structure would be:

Cost: person appreciation no longer has a place in the Olah triad. It has to enter through post-training/interface/use.
**Option 2: Split light into pre-training light and assistant-role light.**
This keeps more of Enrico’s thought.
Pre-training light: next-token objective or training objective.
Post-training light: assistant-role shaping, helpfulness norms, conversational form.
Person appreciation attaches to the second, not the first.
Advantage: preserves the idea that some shaping pressure explains the person-like profile.
Cost: risky. The word “light” might become overloaded. The paper would need to be explicit that this is an extension of Olah’s image, not a literal reading of the quote.
**Option 3: Say light explains teleology, not personhood.**
The light gives the system a direction of optimization. That can make the system look purposive. But purposiveness is not personhood. It explains why design/function categories are tempting, and perhaps why agentive language comes easily, but it does not justify person appreciation.
Advantage: conceptually sharp.
Cost: may weaken the person section unless post-training is added separately.
**Option 4: Use light as a trap.**
The quote tempts us to think in terms of scaffold, light, and organism. But Carlson’s method tells us to ask what kind of thing this really is. The light is not intention. The growth is not life. The scaffold is not the whole artifact. Each metaphor has to be disciplined.
Advantage: strong philosophical posture.
Cost: less immediately structural. It is a more subtle use of the quote.
I think Options 1 and 2 can be combined.
The paper can say: in Olah’s image, scaffold and light are design-side. The light is the objective around which training is organized. But deployed LLMs also involve later shaping toward an assistant role. That later shaping explains why person appreciation becomes a natural candidate. Still, neither the original objective nor the assistant role gives us the grown organization itself. That is the part that requires order appreciation.
This gives a better whole-paper structure:

That would save Enrico’s core thought while fixing his mistaken mapping.
Now, what about the relation to the older sections?
Enrico says the design and person sections were better in the previous version. I do not know which exact passages he has in mind, but the screenshots make the direction clear. He thinks the new structure is better overall, but the older treatment of artifacts/persons had something the current sections lost. My guess is that the old version may have made the Olah-driven architecture clearer: design accounts for scaffold; person accounts for light or assistant role; order accounts for growing. The new version may be cleaner locally, but less compelling as a whole-paper setup.
So one way to use his feedback is not to abandon the current Sections 2 and 3, but to give them a stronger shared frame. At the moment, Section 2 asks whether design appreciation can guide appreciation of LLMs. Section 3 asks whether person-directed knowledge can guide appreciation. They are sequential candidates. Enrico may want them to become responses to parts of a single opening problem.
That is important.
The current structure says:
- Try design.
- It fails.
- Try person.
- It fails.
- Try order.
The Enrico structure says:
- LLMs have scaffold, light, and growth from the start.
- Design explains one aspect.

Likewise for person appreciation. Users really do experience models through apparent personalities, voices, assistant roles, and response profiles. Aesthetic attention to these features is not simply stupid. It is tracking something real in the text. The mistake is to treat those profiles as traits of a person. So again, person appreciation should not be treated as a discarded error. It should be treated as a mislocated response to real textual form.
That may be the deep value of Enrico’s feedback: it points toward a non-eliminative structure.
Design appreciation: real but partial.
Person appreciation: tempting because it tracks real appearances, but mislocated if taken literally.
Order appreciation: needed to account for what design and person appreciation leave unaccounted for.
That is better than “design fails, person fails, order succeeds.”
The paper can then avoid a crude negative dialectic. It can say:
> LLMs call for several kinds of knowledge, but the central aesthetic novelty lies in the trained order that emerges through growth.
That seems right.
Now, how do we keep the “appropriate knowledge” frame?
This is where the revised structure can become very strong. Carlson’s core thought is that appropriate appreciation requires knowledge suited to the object. The object is not just “an artifact.” It is not just “an apparent speaker.” It is a trained continuation system whose generated outputs arise from a grown organization. So appropriate knowledge must include design knowledge, social/interface knowledge, and order-oriented process knowledge. But the distinct contribution of the paper is the last of these.
This suggests an even cleaner formulation:
> The question is not which single mode replaces all the others. The question is which mode reaches which aspect of the object.
Need to be careful with the “not X but Y” tic here. But as an analytic point, it is good. The paper should not imply that design and person frameworks are useless. It should distribute them.
A possible map:
- Design knowledge is appropriate to the scaffold and objective.
- Knowledge of post-training and conversational framing is appropriate to the assistant-like profile.
- Order knowledge is appropriate to the grown organization and the generated continuation.
But person appreciation is not straightforwardly “appropriate” even to assistant-like profile. Perhaps better:
- Person-directed knowledge is an understandable candidate for assistant-like profiles, but the better account redescribes those profiles as generated textual patterns.
So maybe:
- Design appreciation is appropriate but incomplete.
- Person appreciation is tempting but needs redescription.
- Order appreciation is needed for the emergent/grown order.
That is more exact.
Let me try a possible plain version of the thought:
Olah’s image should not be read as saying that LLMs are organisms. It shows why they are hard to place. Designers make the scaffold and set the light, but the thing they study is something that grows under those conditions. Carlson’s model makes this aesthetically important. If appreciation should answer to what the object is, then LLMs should not be appreciated only as artifacts whose form is specified by design. Their trained organization is produced by a process. That process-produced organization is what order appreciation is for.
The assistant role enters later. The grown system is not encountered by users as a bare trained network. It is encountered through an interface and a post-training regime that makes its outputs look like turns in conversation. That is why person appreciation is tempting. But the assistant-like profile is not a life or character. It is a way the trained system has been shaped to continue text. So the person section should explain why the temptation arises, then relocate the phenomenon within the order account.
That seems like the core rescue.
Now, what to do with semiotic physics?
Enrico’s final comment is also important. He asks whether you should look for a specific scientific discipline or characterize the relevant knowledge independently of labels. This is a real issue.
If the paper makes “semiotic physics” the name of the appropriate knowledge, it risks two problems.
First, it may sound like the paper depends on a marginal or under-established technical discourse. That might be a weak foundation.
Second, it may make the reader ask whether semiotic physics is actually a discipline in the way geology is a discipline. If Carlson’s natural science analogy requires established scientific categories, then semiotic physics may look too speculative.
But dropping the term entirely may lose something useful. The term captures the idea that generated text has dynamics. It helps name the order of continuations, attractors, constraints, trajectories, and path-dependence. It also distinguishes the project from ordinary literary interpretation.
A balanced approach would be:
- Do not make “semiotic physics” the sole basis of the paper.
- First characterize the required knowledge in plain terms.
- Then introduce semiotic physics as one useful label or candidate framework for that knowledge.
- Make clear that the aesthetic point does not depend on the disciplinary status of the label.
This might answer Enrico directly.
The paper can say: what matters is the kind of knowledge required, not whether it already belongs to a settled discipline. For geology and ecology, Carlson has established sciences. For LLMs, the field is still forming. Some of the relevant knowledge comes from machine learning, some from mechanistic interpretability, some from semiotic accounts of language models, some from practical experience with prompting. The paper uses “semiotic physics” to name the level of explanation needed for appreciation: knowledge of how generated linguistic forms develop under learned constraints.
That feels safer.
It also fits the user-facing fact of LLM appreciation. An appreciator need not know circuits. They need some grasp of how outputs develop from context, how post-training shapes response profiles, how prompts and prior text constrain what comes next, how models can settle into patterns. This may be theoretical or practical. That echoes Carlson’s point that ordinary and scientific knowledge can lie on a continuum.

This is much clearer than the current daily-note Section 4 plan because it moves the Olah frame to the beginning of the whole paper. It may also imply that the Introduction and Sections 2-3 need reworking, not just Section 4.
The risk is that the paper becomes too attached to one metaphor. The Olah quote is useful, but it cannot do all the work. “Growth” is metaphorical. Olah himself says “almost biological entity or organism,” and that could mislead. Carlson’s method should discipline the metaphor: LLMs are not biological organisms, and training is not biological development. The apt point is weaker and more precise: the trained organization is not specified directly by the designers but emerges from a process they set in motion.
That sentence is probably central.
The paper should perhaps say something like:

This is much better than the three-term mapping Enrico proposes, but it also explains why he was drawn to it. Light is not person appreciation, but it is not irrelevant to person appreciation. It is the route through which human textual and conversational order becomes a shaping condition of the model.
So my diagnosis: Claude has found a real pressure point, but it is mishandling it by forcing light into one category. The best version is relational. Light is neither merely the formal loss nor simply the human textual environment. It is the directed training relation between them. That is where design, person-like appearance, and order appreciation start to come apart.

Claude has generated a useful distinction, then overcommitted to it.
The useful distinction is:
- formal objective: cross-entropy or the engineered loss;
- substantive target: the regularities in human text that make low loss possible.
That distinction is worth keeping. It explains why light is not just a simple design object. Training is directed by an engineered objective, but the direction only has content because it is applied to human textual practice.
The overcommitment is:
> Olah’s light is the second.
That is too strong. After being pressed, Claude started to see the problem: Olah says we create the light, and he explicitly mentions loss objectives. That points toward the formal objective. But the formal objective does not operate in empty space. It directs learning over a corpus. So the right move is not to choose one side as the light. The right move is to say that light names the directedness of training, which includes both the engineered objective and the textual regularities toward which the objective pulls the model.
So I would now put it this way:

That seems to preserve what was good in Claude’s thought without making the interpretive mistake.
This also helps with Enrico. His person-light mapping is still too quick, but it is not crazy if light is understood as directedness toward human linguistic order. Human text includes address, stance, reply, style, deference, refusal, explanation, persona-like forms. Post-training narrows and intensifies some of those patterns into assistant response. That is why person appreciation becomes tempting.
So the emerging view is:
- scaffold: the architecture and training setup;
- light: the directedness of training, formally engineered but substantively tied to human textual order;
- growing: the trained organisation that emerges under that directedness;
- person appreciation: tempting because some of the relevant textual order is social and conversational, especially after post-training;
- order appreciation: needed because the person-like profile is still generated order, not a subject’s life.
Claude is useful here when it points to the formal/substantive distinction. It misleads when it tries to assign light to only one side.

Claude has now moved to a different and useful clarification: training versus inference.
The main claim is that Enrico’s scaffold/light/growing triad belongs to the training stage, while person-like assistant behaviour appears at the inference/output stage. That helps diagnose the earlier confusion: light can shape the conditions under which an assistant persona emerges, but the persona is not the light. The persona is a manifest feature of outputs.
This is useful, but I would soften one thing. Claude says Enrico is structurally wrong because modes of appreciation attach to objects, not developmental forces. That is too rigid. Carlsonian appreciation can be guided by knowledge of processes and forces. The object is not the force, but the force can be exactly what makes the object appreciable. So Enrico may be wrong to map person appreciation directly to light, but not wrong to think the light matters for the kind of appreciation at issue.
The strong takeaway for our paper is:
Training and inference need to be distinguished because the relevant order exists at both levels.
Training produces the model’s dispositions. Inference produces specific generated texts from those dispositions under prompt and sampling conditions. Order appreciation of LLMs may need knowledge of both: how the dispositions were formed and how they manifest in outputs.
This also helps with Section 5/levels:
- output appreciation: inference product;
- chat appreciation: extended inference interaction;
- model appreciation: trained dispositional system.
That is a very good alignment.
I think this does change the discussion in a useful way. It suggests that the paper should not frame semiotic physics only as knowledge of text propagation in outputs. It should include, or at least acknowledge, two linked levels: developmental order from training and operational order in inference.

Claude has added a useful development, and this one does change the live picture a bit.
First, it explored fictional-character appreciation as a way to save Enrico’s person intuition. The thought is: person-like engagement may attach to the Claude persona, understood as something like a generated fictional character, while order appreciation attaches to the model as a trained system. That gives Enrico’s intuition a place without mapping person appreciation onto light. It also suggests a possible way to bring in Enrico’s own prior work on fictional characters.
Second, Claude elaborated the pre-training point. The strongest formulation is:
> Pre-training is where the model absorbs the textual environment, and semiotic physics is the natural framework for characterising what gets absorbed. Post-training is where a persona is shaped from the resulting material.
That is a good distinction, though I would adjust one phrase. Post-training is not just persona-shaping; it also shapes refusal, helpfulness, safety, instruction-following, and response structure. But for the present debate, the persona point is useful.
The provisional upshot:
- Pre-training: saturates the model with regularities of human textual practice. This is where semiotic physics has its strongest claim.
- Post-training: shapes those dispositions into assistant-like behaviour. This is where person or fictional-character appreciation becomes tempting.
- Inference: manifests both in particular outputs and chats.
This gives a possible reconciliation with Enrico:
