That a model arrives at its comparisons by fitting a pattern rather than by weighing them is, on this account, a fact about how the text comes to be and not about what it is worth. The pattern fitted is not the bare connective of explanation but the comparison that discriminates — the reasoning as it was actually written, which is what Floridi grants these systems have absorbed (2025, p. 9). Whether a given comparison does discriminate is then settled where all such questions are, by reading it against the rivals it means to decide between. Where the cited difference fails, the page shows a weighing that has not come off, just as it would in a person's prose; that a system produces such failures tells us how often it manages the discrimination, not whether it can manage it at all. What the model cannot do is tell, of its own output, a weighing it has performed from one it has only reproduced — but that was never a distinction its readers relied on.
This speaks to the verdict, reached earlier, that such a model is at best a brainstorming aid whose output a "cautious human collaborator" must sift (2025, p. 11). The picture is right that the outputs come unsorted, the good among the bad, and that a reader must do the sorting. But the reader of any philosophy does the sorting; no text, whoever set it down, is spared the question of whether its case holds, and a good comparison drawn from such a system is read on the same terms as one a philosopher reached at the first attempt. The sorting the picture points to is not a tax peculiar to machine-made text. It is reading.
None of this credits the model with reasoning, or promises that what it produces will be good. It establishes something narrower, and enough: that a comparison can discriminate whatever produced it, and that a system which only continues text is not barred from setting such a comparison down. So the step Floridi's challenge needs — from the model's not weighing to its text's being mere appearance — does not go through. What would make the text mere appearance is a difference that fails to tell, and whether it fails is found by reading the page, not settled in advance by the architecture that produced it.
