Here's how I read what those beats are doing.
A note on what I'm doing first: I'm reading your plan, not re-verifying Floridi, Wolfram, and Lipton against their texts. The plan already carries your extracted quotes and page refs, and the task is to show I understand the architecture you've laid out. If we move to drafting any of these beats, source extraction becomes mandatory before I write a word.
## The overall shape
The drafted paragraph at line 43 sets the lever: you concede Floridi's description of the mechanism (LLMs don't weigh-and-choose as humans do) but refuse the inference from that to "therefore they can't produce text that exhibits abductive reasoning." The calculator does the work — no arithmetic-as-a-person-does, correct sums nonetheless.
The planned beats then run in two movements with a hand-off:
- Move one — B, worked through C: the dissolution. Read the text actually on the page; the weighing is there; "appearance only" turns out to mean one of two things, neither of which impugns the weighing.

## Beat by beat
A · the veneer restated. State the charge in its sharpest form, in Floridi's own phrasing — "abduction on the surface" over a "stochastic core," the facade, the veneer. You flag that p. 19's "veneer of explanation can be a trap" sits in his dangers register (being misled by something authoritative-sounding), so it's not quite the analytic claim; the load-bearing statement is the p. 9 mechanism: the model "outputs typical causes for typical effects" rather than reasoning about causes from scratch. B · the dissolution (move one). The pivot question: what would it actually be for the appearance to be appearance only? It would be counterfeit weighing — the distinction drawn doesn't tell the rivals apart, the ground offered doesn't bear. But Floridi never exhibits such a case; he concedes the in-distribution output is the explanation a competent reasoner would give. So for the text in front of you, "appearance only" can rest on only two grounds, and neither is a defect in the weighing on the page:
1. The producer-prong — no mind reasoned. Already granted (the calculator), so it doesn't touch whether the weighing is there.
2. The world-prong — it's not checked against the facts. That's a charge about whether the weighing is borne out, which is §3's debt, not a verdict on whether weighing occurs.
After both are routed, one lever remains standing: the "it would crack on the novel" diagnostic (p. 15 — failure when the format is altered, sporadic success as overfitting). B only names it; move two breaks it.
The sub-note I read as doing real work here is the genuineness criterion (you mark it as absorbing old beat [3]): a text is that weighing only where the words genuinely discriminate — and whether they do is settled by what the words say, drawn in the text. So demanding genuineness "reinstates no act behind the page." That's what stops Floridi from re-importing the producer-prong under the word "genuine": genuineness is cashed out textually (Lipton's contrastive Difference Condition), not as a hidden mental act.
C · the car, on his own example. The worked instance of B, and you note it's flipped from the old plan: rather than setting his bare verdict against a richer model output, use Floridi's own car answer — the one he grants a human would give. Its body supplies the consideration that tells battery from oil (cold cuts the battery's delivery of current); that consideration is the weighing, set down on the page. His deflation, "a typical conversational move," lands only on the closing selection-sentence (the producer-prong) — it leaves the discriminating body untouched. The rhetorical force is that his own concession is turned against him.
You leave one decision open here: his answer alone, or a richer generated output (the Kimi K2.6 exchange) beside it — and if the latter, whether to name model/date and whether to use the reasoning trace at all, since the trace is itself more generated text and cuts both ways.
D · grammar, the proof of concept (move two, first half). A system given no rules keeps its sentences grammatical, and the result is grammar, not an imitation of grammar — on two counts. First: well-formedness is a property of the sentence, not of how it was reached, so a sentence composed under no rule is as well formed as one composed with the rule in view. Second: the system keeps grammatical sentences that no store of examples could hold (the n-gram impossibility — more sequences than particles in the universe), so it has caught the regularity itself, not memorised surfaces. That second count is the one aimed at the diagnostic: it's what denies that the system has only a surface that would part from the substance on sentences it never saw. Wolfram is the demonstrated, uncontested case.
E · the weighing learned the same way; the diagnostic disarmed; the formal bound held out (move two, second half). The twin of the grammar paragraph: weighing toward explanatory virtue is a regularity of the same kind — done in the writing wherever explanations are set against one another and one is preferred, structural and comparative, the virtue read off what the words say, just as grammar is. Floridi grants the model absorbed it (p. 9, "absorbed patterns of human abductive reasoning as expressed in writing"). What's absorbed this way is followed — not struck by chance, as a parrot's stray argument would be. And because corpus-learned competence generalises (D's second count), "would crack on the novel" doesn't follow from "learned from a corpus" — so the lever B left standing fails. The single concession: genuine step-by-step formal derivation, which a feed-forward system can't carry through — but that isn't the weighing, so it costs nothing. You restrict Floridi's own p. 9 bound to the "complex multi-step logical puzzles" half and reject the "truly novel situations" half (D already answers it). Held out of the body as a trailing clause or footnote; and the "Wolfram-discipline" note is a drafting rule, not content — write it so Wolfram is never made to say the model reasons.
F · hand-off to §3. One or two sentences: what §2 secures is the weighing, not its hold on the world. Whether the lovelier explanation is also borne out turns on the system's access to the world — held over. The seam falls exactly where Lipton's loveliness gives way to likeliness, and where Wolfram's text that "sounds right" gives way to text "correct about the world." The open item is the reader-sorts defusal: that a reader must still tell the holding explanations from the rest is no charge, since that sorting is the condition on which any philosophy gets read (answering Floridi p. 11) — you've left open whether that earns a closing sentence or the dissolution has already made it redundant.
## The drafted Wolfram paragraph
The paragraph at line 82 is written, but you've flagged that it asserts the grounding both D and E need and runs them together — so it's to be split, the grammar half going to D, the weighing-is-the-same-kind half going to E, each grounded in its own sources. As it stands it carries the whole move-two argument in compressed form, including the parrot contrast that E reuses.
Two things I notice that aren't beats but will shape drafting: footnote [^1] is empty (flagged at line 86), and the inline %%...%% comments throughout the drafted paragraphs are your edit-notes on prose already written, separate from these planned beats.
Is my reading of the move-one / move-two division the one you intend — particularly that B's whole job is to reduce the charge to the single "cracks on the novel" lever, and that everything in D and E exists to break precisely that lever?

The reason I find this slightly tricky is that Floridi himself is not very clear about what he means here. Can we go slowly while we work out what we want to say in this paragraph? It has to be something along the lines of: a proponent of Floridi might argue that LLMs, given the sort of system they are, cannot produce text exhibiting good abduction. All they can do is produce text that has a surface‑level abductive appearance—a veneer of explanation.
We can throw in those two quotes from the text, or a compelling illusion, as another option. Anyway, those are my thoughts. We’re still very slowly trying to work out exactly what to say.

3. A world/truth claim — the output isn't checked against reality, so it can be IBE-optimal and still false. "they generate candidates… but do not genuinely validate them against reality" (pp. 5–6); "An explanation can be coherent and convincing (even optimal by IBE criteria) and yet still false" (p. 19).
The metaphor lets him move among these without announcing it. That's why it reads as unclear: "it's just a veneer" feels like one thought, but it resolves into three, and they don't stand or fall together.
## The slide that matters for us: process vs. product
Here's the thing the calculator paragraph does to this. There's a deeper ambiguity running underneath all three strands — whether "appearance" means appearance-of-a-process (no reasoning happened) or appearance-in-the-product (the text only looks like good abduction but isn't). The calculator concedes the first: we grant no process. So if A's charge is read as "there's no reasoning behind it," the previous paragraph has already answered it and there's no section left to write.
Which means the version of the facade charge worth stating in A has to be the product one: even granting no process, the text itself is only the appearance of good abduction, not the real thing. And here's the awkwardness for your quote-dropping plan — Floridi's most quotable phrases are pitched at the process register, not the product one:

That's an illusion that reasoning occurred. Same with "surface-level abductive appearances" (p. 19) and "veneer of explanation" (p. 19). That's legitimate (it's the charitable, strong reconstruction), but we should do it knowingly, and the prose around the quote has to carry the product sense so the quote doesn't drag us back to the conceded process claim.
## What this gives A to do
So A's job, as I now see it: voice the facade charge at the product level, ground it in the one mechanism Floridi actually offers — that the system reproduces, from training, the forms in which human abductive reasoning was written down — so that the charge is "what's on the page is the inherited shape of abduction, not abduction performed." That mechanism (p. 9, "absorbed patterns of human abductive reasoning as expressed in writing") is what makes it a real charge rather than an epithet. (Worth knowing: that exact sentence is also the one your beat E turns around — so we may want to gesture at the mechanism in A and save the verbatim quote for E, where it bears weight. A fork to flag, not settle.)
Two things I'd resist in A. First, don't pre-sort the three strands — A should state the facade whole and forceful, the way Floridi leaves it, because B is where the unbundling happens (genetic → conceded, world → §3, brittleness → the residue D/E break). If A analyses, it steals B's work. Second, don't close A on "and this is the question the section must answer" — that's the metacommentary you usually cut. The phrase doing hidden work is "given the sort of system they are" — that's a black box, and it's carrying the whole inference from process to product. I'd want to open it: the sort of system that has absorbed the forms of abductive writing and reproduces them. Otherwise the reader can't see why "the sort of system they are" is supposed to license "only surface" — and seeing why is exactly what the section is going to contest (the calculator's whole point being that the sort of system something is does not settle what its output amounts to).
A rough shape to react to — logical sketch, not a draft in your voice, and not final:

The hinge works. "this possibility" reaches straight back to the last sentence of the calculator paragraph — "it might be possible for LLMs to produce text which displays abductive reasoning, despite it not being grounded in any actual abductive reasoning." So "this possibility" already means the good-product-without-the-process possibility, and "However… ruled out" turns on exactly that. The anaphora does a job for free: it pins the charge at the product level before the reader can slide back to the process claim you already conceded. The opener inherits the right target without having to argue for it.
And "sometimes seem to argue" earns its keep — it isn't just hedging-for-safety. Floridi really does talk in two voices about this. There's a ruling-out voice: in the abstract, LLMs "generate text based on learned associations rather than performing abductive inferences," and produce answers "without any abductive reasoning." But there's a granting voice, about the very same outputs: "the LLM manages to produce the same explanation a human reasoner would likely choose" (p. 10), an explanation that can be "even optimal by IBE criteria" (p. 19). He both rules it out and concedes the product is as good as a competent human's. "sometimes seem to" tracks that wobble honestly, where a flat "Floridi argues" would overstate. Structural: the load-bearing clause is "the way LLMs function means that…", and right now that's a sealed box — it asserts the step from how they work to what they can produce without showing it. Fine for a first sentence, but it throws the weight onto sentence two, which has to open the box, and the thing inside is the reproduction-of-forms mechanism — the one concrete account Floridi gives. Novelty doesn't push grammar to the bad side, and there's no principled reason it should push abduction there either. A novel abductive claim need not be computationally irreducible; it can be handled by the absorbed weighing-regularity just as a novel sentence is handled by the absorbed grammar.

Also right, and it bites exactly where I leaned on Wolfram for a capacity claim rather than a conceptual one: the feed-forward concession. His "pure 'feed-forward' network, without loops… no ability to do any kind of computation with nontrivial 'control flow'" is a per-token architectural claim from 2023 — and he himself adds the loophole, the net loops "by virtue of generating new tokens." 2026 reasoning models industrialise that loophole, and Floridi's own Reply 5 describes it:
