# Scratch Pad
*Quick notes, surfaced content, things to have on hand today*
- New command: `/remember` — banks passages from conversation to a project's integration queue. Say "remember that" or "remember the bit about X" and it saves the full text to [[Generating Philosophy - Integration Queue]] (or whichever project is active). First entry already there from tonight's session (Gaut fn. 23).
- Three source reports in Attachments/: `boden_report.txt`, `colton_report_v2.txt`, `gaut_report_v2.txt` — targeted extractions for the generating philosophy paper.
- Colton PDF downloaded and moved to `Learning/generating-philosophy/`.

## Actions
- 11:00 — Created `source-work` skill (`~/.claude/skills/source-work/SKILL.md`)
- **Purpose:** Mandatory extraction-first workflow when working with academic texts (PDFs, EPUBs, Markdown, text files). Enforces quotation accuracy by requiring all quotes to be copy-pasted from extracted source text.
- **Trigger:** Auto-triggers via description when reading, analysing, comparing, or quoting scholarly sources.
- **Origin:** During comparison of Zahavy (2026) and Floridi et al. papers from the generating philosophy folder, Claude produced a comparison without first consulting the `quotation-accuracy` knowledge file — and when it did verify, found one attribution error (claimed Floridi used "Chinese Room" when only Zahavy does). Nick pointed out this should have been automatic. Existing `pdf` skill is a manipulation toolkit, not a source-reading workflow. New skill fills that gap.
- **Contents:** Extraction workflow (format-specific: pdftotext, pandoc, direct read), quotation rules (copy-paste only, never reconstruct), multi-source comparison protocol, epistemic marking (source → interpretation → speculation), red flags checklist.
- **Related changes:** Updated `~/.claude/knowledge/quotation-accuracy.md` to point to the skill as authoritative location for the workflow (knowledge file retains error history and recovery protocol).
- 11:00 — Removed "On-demand skills" section from CLAUDE.md
- **What it was:** Lines 10–14 of CLAUDE.md listed four skills (`tag-conventions`, `nick-analytic-voice`, `writing-standards`, `epistemic-discipline`) under the heading "On-demand skills (auto-load when relevant)."
- **Why removed:** No evidence this section provided a distinct triggering mechanism. All skill descriptions are already loaded in the system prompt every turn. The `@` references above it mechanically include files; this list was just plain text reinforcement. Nick didn't remember setting it up, and the four skills singled out had no clear mechanical reason for special status beyond being behavioural constraints rather than tool capabilities.
- **To reverse:** Add back to CLAUDE.md under `## Reference Documentation`, after the `@` references:
```
**On-demand skills (auto-load when relevant):**
- `tag-conventions` — Tag and wiki-link conventions (loads when creating/editing notes)
- `nick-analytic-voice` — Analytic philosophical writing voice (loads when writing manuscripts, developed notes)
- `writing-standards` — Quotation conventions, punctuation, formatting (loads for formal content)
- `epistemic-discipline` — Detailed rules for capturing developing ideas (loads for notes/session files)
```
- 11:30 — Created `source-work-hook.sh` (`~/.claude/hooks/source-work-hook.sh`)
- **Why:** Tested the `source-work` skill in a fresh chat. The skill description was visible in the system prompt but Claude went straight to extracting and comparing PDFs without ever invoking the Skill tool. Produced a comparison that sounded authoritative but wasn't anchored to verified quotations. When asked "what skills did you use?", the fresh Claude admitted it used none.
- **Mechanism:** `UserPromptSubmit` hook (same pattern as `session-deep-hook.sh`). Detects academic source keywords in user prompts and injects the extraction-first protocol as a system reminder. Fires mechanically — no Claude judgment involved.
- **Trigger patterns:** (1) action + object: "read/compare/analyse/summarise" + "paper/pdf/article/source/text/book" etc. (2) folder references: "learning", "generating philosophy", "typography". (3) direct references: "pdfs folder", "academic", "scholarly", "the X paper". (4) author queries: "what does/did X argue/say/claim".
- **Registered in:** `~/.claude/settings.json` under `hooks.UserPromptSubmit`, alongside `session-deep-hook.sh` and `auto-log-sessions-hook.sh`.
- **Lesson:** A skill is a suggestion; a hook is a mechanism. For mandatory workflows, the hook ensures the protocol fires regardless of whether Claude decides to invoke the skill.
- 12:00 — Created `epistemic-discipline-hook.sh` (`~/.claude/hooks/epistemic-discipline-hook.sh`)
- **Why:** In VR paper session, Claude brainstormed at length about Nick's philosophical position vs. Fisher's without loading the epistemic-discipline skill. Result: presented Nick's committed thesis as an "open question" and a "strategic choice for the paper," prompting frustration ("Sometimes it seems you don't listen at all... fucking hell"). The skill was only loaded later for the session note update. Claude's own justification — "most relevant when writing notes and session files rather than during back-and-forth chat" — was wrong. The skill description says "writing anything that represents his intellectual position," which includes chat.
- **Mechanism:** Same as source-work-hook. `UserPromptSubmit` hook that detects research-related prompts and injects epistemic discipline reminder.
- **Trigger patterns:** (1) project names: "generating philosophy", "typography aesthetics", "VR and perceptual", "auditory images", "mckenna". (2) Nick's own positions: "my paper/argument/view/position/thesis", "I'm arguing/claiming". (3) session/manuscript operations. (4) collaborative brainstorming: "let's think about/work through/develop", "what if we", "how should we frame/argue".
- **Injected reminder** emphasises: applies to CONVERSATION not just notes; do not re-open committed positions as "open questions"; no hierarchy words.
- **Registered in:** `~/.claude/settings.json` under `hooks.UserPromptSubmit`.
- 12:30 — Overhauled `session-deep-hook.sh` (`~/.claude/hooks/session-deep-hook.sh`)
- **Why:** Brought up to the same standard as the two new hooks (source-work, epistemic-discipline).
- **Removed:** (1) `"before we"` trigger — false-positived on "before we start, let's..." (2) `"you should know"` trigger — false-positived on non-session contexts. (3) 18-line inline Python fallback for session extraction — `session-reader.py` is stable infrastructure; the fallback inflated every injection for a scenario that won't arise.
- **Added triggers:** `"the other day"`, `"a few days ago"`, `"earlier today/this week"`, `"last session/conversation/chat"`, `"catch up"`, `"bring me up to speed"`, `"what were we"`, `"where were we"`, `"where did we leave"`, `"remind me what we"`, `"recap"`, `"we worked on"`, `"we were talking/working"`, `"our conversation about"`, `"read the session/transcript"`.
- **Restructured:** Single `TRIGGERS` variable → five named categories (`TEMPORAL`, `PAST_CONVO`, `CONTINUITY`, `RECALL`, `DIRECTIVE`) matching the pattern of the other hooks.
- **Injected protocol:** Unchanged (was already good — four required steps + DO NOT section).
- 23:36 — Added task: "Laptop: set up vault backup + config sync"
