# Gardening Midjourney Review Responses
**Opening (not a real abstract):** Responses to Reviewer Comments Report 1 Reviewer: “Growing the Image” is a really interesting essay. The authors argue that image-generating programs like Midjourney are neither artistic agents nor artistic tools. They are instead something closer to a medium, one that displays its own recalcitrance. The authors develop an interesting notion that they call “dynamic recalcitrance”, which describes the way in which the artist must negotiate with a generative AI to get the results that they want, much the same way that a gardener must respond to the ever-changing conditions of their garden to get their desired results. This essay is well written, well researched, and it makes a valuable step forward in advancing the debate over the artistic potential of generative AI programs. My only minor gripe is that I don’t like
