Plan A (this session): Sections 2 (Floridi, 8 beats), 3 (Zahavy, 16 beats), 4 (constructive case, 22 beats). Plan B (parallel session): Sections 2 (Floridi + virtue-filtered corpus thesis, 12 beats), 3 (Zahavy + phenomenology + Machery, 15 beats), no standalone Section 4. A synthesis was proposed: Section 2 (Floridi + full virtue-filtered corpus thesis including Bengson/Walton, transitive calibration, norm/pattern — ~15 beats), Section 3 (Zahavy + grain spectrum + Machery + dialectical saturation + novelty + evocation — ~16 beats), no standalone Section 4. The abandoned draft is not in use. (Session note updated.) - Floridi response lives in Section 2. Zahavy response lives in Section 3. Machery goes in Section 3 alongside Zahavy (same argument form). - Pronouns: always "we" (co-authored with Enrico). Introduction fixed. - Neither Floridi nor Zahavy writes about philosophy — the paper applies their arguments. This must be explicit. - The extension of Zahavy's argument TO philosophy is the paper's work and must feel like a genuine threat before the response. - The Zahavy response has four layers mapped to three components: (b) thought experiments are textual, (c) referents are textual, (a) starting points are propositional (Pigliucci) + phenomenological grain spectrum. Plus a consequence-tracing fallback. - Machery: dissolution move (intuitions are propositional in the literature) + judo move (unreliable intuitions favour the corpus). Section 3 brainstormed with both Codex and Claude (Opus). Two competing structural proposals exist for Section 3, neither committed. Codex: 22-paragraph beat sheet with three-component decomposition of Zahavy (starting materials / referents / framework-generation). Opus: 14-15 paragraphs organised around the armchair-methodology frame (one question: does philosophy's armchair character make it available to LLMs?). Full structural plan for Opus version updated in [[Sessions/Generating Philosophy]] Context for Next Session. **Decided**: - Section 2 material (corpus filtering, grammar analogy, Lipton convergence, squash analogy, Floridi hedge, Model A/B) should be cleaned out of Section 3 file — it's now in Section 2 - Section 4 is practical (prompting for philosophy), so Section 3 should not preempt prompting discussion **Rejected**: - Codex's three-component decomposition of Zahavy (starting materials / referents / framework-generation) — "starting materials" and "referents" are barely separable; both ask whether relevant inputs are available in articulated form. The real partition is input problem vs novelty problem, not three pieces. - 22-paragraph Section 3 — unbalances the paper against ~15-paragraph Section 2; risks checklist feel - Dialectical saturation as standalone late beat — better folded into novelty discussion as a sentence or two - Three separate Machery paragraphs — gives him too much prominence as supporting player **Open**: - Choose between armchair-methodology frame (Opus) and Zahavy-vs-Floridi contrast opening (Codex) - Whether Pigliucci's double role works as 2 paragraphs or should be compressed to 1 - Whether phenomenological grain spectrum needs Chalmers/Merleau-Ponty to cash it out - Whether dialectical saturation deserves more space than 1-2 sentences within novelty - Begin rewriting Section 3 once structure is decided **Late-emerging**: The observation that Williamson's armchair-methodology point (mathematics as precedent, evidence base unrestricted) gives Section 3 its own intellectual identity — the section is about whether philosophy's armchair character survives Zahavy's challenge, rather than being a generic "answer Zahavy" exercise. The Codex draft from March 19 was audited on three dimensions — voice (17 issues found), source accuracy (all quotes verified, Machery page numbers unverifiable from extraction), and philosophical depth (10/14 paragraphs shallow, dominant pattern: moves described but not made). The rewrite addresses all three layers. The section now follows the C→B→D progression (input-availability challenge → governing inquiry → graded conclusion). Each paragraph performs its specific philosophical move rather than describing it.
