# Giving Emotions Their Due **Opening (not a real abstract):** Contained within Peter Lamarque’s The Philosophy of Literature are exceptionally lucid expositions of strengths and weaknesses of a range of views about the nature and value of literature as an art. Thoughtful and measured discussions, elegantly organized around seven broad topics—art, literature, authors, practice, fiction, truth, and value—reinforce Lamarque’s view that ‘seeing what the problems are and thinking them through can be as important as settling on some final conclusions’ (p. ix). One topic the book does not address directly, however, is whether various affective and emotional responses to literature have an important role in the appreciation of it. Lamarque sidles up to the issue occasionally. In the chapter entitled ‘Value’, for example, he asserts that ‘[v]alue resides in the quality of the experience a work yields’ (p. 259), and **Authors:** [[Susan Feagin]]
