# Holes and Other Superficialities **Opening (not a real abstract):** We started working on this book in the summer of 1989. In the spring of that year a paper by Roberto, no parts of which survive here, had been presented to the ResearchGroup on the Philosophy of Perception in Geneva, during whosemeetingsholes were sometimesmentioned as problematic perceptual objects. At that time, Achiile was struggling with truth value gaps and other harassingsemantic nonentitles, and was starting to develop a hyperrealistic attitude towards them. As we met in July at a lecture by Kit Fine on the logic of ordinary objects, where holes and other immaterial things were evoked as troublemakers, it somehow looked natural to join our efforts and face this neglectedside of reality once and for all.
