# Making Events
**Opening (not a real abstract):** Simon Evnine 25 mins "A Goblin Walking Quietly Over the Universe": Artifactual Events and Musical Experience This paper is motivated by a rather odd problem I am afflicted by. (I have occasionally mentioned it to other people but no-one has admitted to being similarly perplexed so perhaps the whole paper is much ado about nothing!) The problem concerns listening to music for more than a cou‐ ple of minutes and can be put in a nutshell: I don't know what I'm sup‐ posed to be doing when I'm listening. Or perhaps, I don't know what lis‐ tening is. (I will add that I have a degree in musicology, so it's not that music is somehow alien to me.) I can easily sit quietly for the duration, but it's my mind that is the problem. What, if anything, should I be think‐ ing about? Is one supposed to (try and) avoid thinking at all and some‐
