If you look at the photograph of your grandmother, you see, or seem to see, her even if she is far away or may even have passed away. In this respect, pictures are somewhat similar to sentences. Sentences can also be about something that is not present. The sentence “The Golden Gate Bridge is red” is about the Golden Gate Bridge. And even if this sentence is written far away from San Francisco, it manages to be about something that is thousands of miles away.
