# Nick's phd thesis **Opening (not a real abstract):** I would like to thank the chair of my committee, Elijah Chudnoff, for his unstinting support and suggestions too numerous to mention; Amie Thomasson and Colin McGinn, who were also on my committee and were likewise helpful and supportive; and my external committee member, Rob Hopkins, both for his contributions to this thesis and for getting me interested in imagination in the first place. I have benefitted greatly from being part of two friendly, collegial philosophy departments, first in Sheffield, then in Miami. I am grateful to all the faculty members and graduate students in both departments for their acheivements in creating such pleasant and productive working environments, and for the many suggestions and pieces of advice I have gathered from them.
