# Psychedelic Experience **Opening (not a real abstract):** In the previous chapter, we established that our central question is a conceptual one. It is the question of what it means for an experience to be psychedelic. I then provided a rough answer: an experience is psychedelic if it is a mind-revealing experience. However, we don’t really know what a mind-revealing experience is yet. This chapter aims to unpack this idea in more detail. To get started, in Section 3.2, we will explore the history of the idea of a psychedelic experience. Although the term ‘psychedelic’ is due to Humphrey Osmond, we will see that the idea of a psychedelic experience dates back to well before his time. Appreciating the history of the idea will help us develop a more contextual understanding of the concept of psychedelic experience.
