# SYNT D24 01771 **Keywords:** 4E cognition music work of art artifact material emgagement **Abstract:** Music is canonically included among the six canonical forms of art, and thus can be considered a work of art in its own right. From a purely aesthetic perspective, music can be evaluated on its own terms. However, in recent years, a new vision of human existence in its entirety has emerged, under the lens of 4E cognition, which opens the way to new ways of understanding cognition, affectivity and experiences lato sensu, including artistic ones. When viewed in this manner, music assumes the characteristics of an embodied phenomenon, liberating itself from the control of the res cognitans over the res extensa. Therefore, considering that the capacity to extend oneself through technologies has been an integral and fundamental aspect of human existence since the emergence of Homo sapiens on Earth, it is also possible to conceptualise music as a specific type of artifact that enables the extension of the self beyond the confines of the skull and skin.
