# SYNT-D-24-01170 **Keywords:** AI, generative art, traditional art, art/artifact, user experience, art appreciation. **Abstract:** The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) raises questions about its impact on creative industries and the value of human work. This article explores whether generative art fundamentally differs from traditional visual art and if it can be considered true art. We argue that generative art shares significant continuity with traditional forms while introducing unique characteristics that can positively impact artistic exploration and growth. Adopting a user-experience perspective, we challenge the notion that art is distinct from artifacts, asserting that AI-generated images are artifacts similar to traditional artworks but with notable differences. Section 1 critiques the art/artifact distinction, leading to our analysis in Section 2 of the functional aspects of AI-generated images in art-making and appreciation. We conclude that AI-artworks, like traditional ones, are artifacts that embrace artificiality, expanding our understanding of art and its creation.
