# Section 3 restructuring — checkpoint 24 Mar
**State**: Section 3 needs complete structural overhaul, not patching. Two parallel sessions (Claude + Codex) reviewed Enrico's transcript comments and produced lists of cuts/keeps. Cuts are decided (Chinese Room, Dummett, grief, Austin as standalone paragraph, the physics/philosophy distinction framing). Keeps are decided (Twin Earth, Mary, Merleau-Ponty, Pigliucci expanded, Machery developed). The section's CEV is identified: three questions (what are philosophy's inputs? → do responses require something non-propositional? → is availability uniform?) plus a world-models-based explanation of the asymmetry. Multiple paragraph plans attempted and rejected — ordering and depth problems throughout. Full structural plan updated in [[Sessions/Generating Philosophy]] Context for Next Session.
**Decided**:
- Chinese Room, Dummett, grief, Kripke/Lewis standalone, and the physics-vs-philosophy framing all cut
- Austin fabricated examples identified; Austin no longer a standalone paragraph
- Pigliucci becomes the section's theoretical framework (Smolin evocation, conceptual landscapes)
- Machery gets two full paragraphs (deflation + cognitive artifacts), not compression
- Mary belongs in the availability spectrum near Merleau-Ponty, not as illustration of "how thought experiments work"
- Colour conversation examples go as footnote, not main text
- Dennett/RoboMary is footnote at most
- World models integrated into conclusion, not tacked on
- Nick is happy with macro restructuring — not just patching
**Rejected**:
- "Philosophy's characteristic method is thought experimentation" — Nick never said this, and the paper shouldn't either
- Physics works on perceptual experience / philosophy works on descriptions — crude and wrong; Einstein was doing a thought experiment
- "Tighten" or "compress" Machery — no basis from Enrico's transcript; was Claude's own unjustified suggestion
- Standalone "complicating Einstein" paragraph — editorial comment confused as content; the input distinction should be folded into the Zahavy presentation
- Austin paragraph with corrected examples — the section has moved away from Austin as a standalone worked example
**Open**:
- The correct ordering of paragraphs — multiple attempts rejected; needs to be derived from the CEV, not from arbitrary sequencing
- Where exactly does Pigliucci enter? After Twin Earth (case first, theory second — matching Nick's prose practice) or before?
- How is the world models paragraph integrated rather than tacked on?
- Whether Williamson needs even a bridge sentence or can be absorbed into a citation
- How much Smolin/Unger apparatus to include (chess analogy only? or full evocation concept?)
