# Seeing_Hearing Groupings, Experiencing Meanings (1) **Opening (not a real abstract):** In this paper we want to show, first, that we can have higher-level visual experiences of grouping properties, i.e., properties that an array of elements we see can have to be organised in a certain way. Second, we argue that there are experiences of groupings in the auditory modality that share certain important properties with visual experiences of groupings, and are therefore perceptual and higher-level as well. Third, we will show how these results enable us to understand the nature and structure of our experiences of speech. While higher-level auditory experiences of groupings can explain the most basic levels of our experiences of speech, they cannot account for our experience of speech sounds as having certain meanings.
