# Sense Modalities and Spatial Properties **Opening (not a real abstract):** Sense Modalities and Spatial Properties In this paper I want to pursue some issues concerning the character of the awareness each of us has of their own body. In part, such awareness arises from the five senses, but it is not exhausted by that: one is also aware of one's body through bodily sensation, kinaesthesia, and one's sense of balance. One might group together these latter experiences as comprising a body sense or bodily awareness. While neurophysiologists and psychologists have long been happy with the idea that there is such awareness, it has tended to be ignored or treated with some circumspection by philosophers1. In particular I shall be concerned to highlight some of the peculiarities of bodily awareness in contrast to the five senses.
