**Opening (not a real abstract):** The physics and biology of sound perception are wellunderstood. We know quite well how objects vibrate in response to being stimulated, how those vibrations create pressure waves in the ambient air, how those waves affect the eardrum, how the ear transduces mechanical input into neurological signals, and how those signals are processed from the inner hair cells into the cortex. Unknown details abound, of course, but they don’t threaten the general scientific picture. Refinement, not revolution, will most likely characterize future work on sound and sound perception. Much the same can be said for our understanding of color and color perception. The foregoing picture is appealing, but there is one sense in which it is misleading.
