# The Aesthetics of Design Chapter 3 **Opening (not a real abstract):** Kant’s aesthetic offers a theory of beauty that meets the conditions I laid out in the last chapter: it is an account that escapes the problems of realism and subjectivism both, and that posits beauty as the result of a particular kind of judgement we make. But, as anything at all can be beautiful on (my reading of) the Kantian account, we have not yet distinguished the beauty of design as a particular kind of aesthetic appraisal that can be marked out from judgements of the beauty of nature, fi ne art, or even craft. Indeed, from the foregoing, it seems that beauty is the same, or operates in the same way, in all things as referenced to our disinterested responses to objects as they appear to us.
