# The Aesthetics of Design Chapter 4 **Opening (not a real abstract):** Everyday Aesthetics is a very recent movement in the discipline that is motivated in ways similar to my own: it seeks to make visible the beauty and significance of the apparently mundane and familiar, and to demonstrate that this is a rich and important part of our lives. Contemporary work in Everyday Aesthetics undertakes a twofold task: it argues for broadening the traditional aesthetic categories and concerns to include familiar objects and quotidian experiences; and it also functions as critique: of the narrowness of scope of philosophical aesthetics as primarily art-centred, and as neglecting the myriad ways in which the aesthetic—as object and experience—directly touches our lives.
