# The Origin of Our Knowledge of Right and Wrong Brentano
**Opening (not a real abstract):** This lecture, which I now bring before a larger public, was given before the Vienna Law Society on January 23, 1889. At that time it was entitled “On the Natural Sanction for Law and Morality [Von der natürlichen Sanktion für recht und sittlich]”. I have changed the title in order to make more clear just what the actual content of the lecture is. But otherwise I have made almost no changes at all. I have added numerous notes and appended one essay that had been previously published—namely, “Miklosich on Subjectless Propositions”. Its bearing upon what may seem to be a very different subject matter will become evident in what follows.
