# The Philosophy of Spatial Hearing: A Research Review
## Introduction and Scope
The question "where are sounds heard to be?" sits at the intersection of two interlocking debates: the metaphysics of sounds (what sort of entity is a sound, if anything?) and the phenomenology and content of auditory experience (does audition present spatial information, and if so, of what sort?). Over the past two decades — and particularly since the publication of Casey O'Callaghan's *Sounds: A Philosophical Theory* (2007), Matthew Nudds and O'Callaghan's edited volume *Sounds and Perception* (2009), and the Stanford Encyclopedia entries by Casati, Dokic and (latterly) Di Bona — anglophone philosophy of perception has assembled a recognisable subfield, in which the metaphysics of sounds, the phenomenology of auditory space, and the relations between audition and the other modalities are treated as mutually constraining. What follows is an opinionated map of the terrain, organised around classical foundations, the metaphysics of sounds and their location, the phenomenology of auditory space, multimodality, and a number of more recent debates.
## I. Classical Foundations
### 1. Strawson's Purely Auditory World
The locus classicus of the modern discussion is the second chapter of P. F. Strawson's *Individuals* (1959), "Sounds." Strawson considers whether a being whose experience were exclusively auditory could possess the conceptual resources to make sense of a distinction between itself and an objective, mind-independent realm. His verdict, more nuanced than it is sometimes reported, is that since spatial concepts have no intrinsic auditory significance — "loud," "high-pitched," "shrill" do not, in their bare auditory employment, locate anything in space — a purely auditory experience would be non-spatial; and yet, given a sufficiently rich formal organisation (the device of a "master-sound" whose pitch varies systematically with the subject's "movement" through a quasi-spatial dimension), even such a being might construct an analogue of objective particulars. The tension between these two strands — that audition is not intrinsically spatial, but that some quasi-spatial scaffolding might be reconstructed within auditory experience — has structured nearly everything since.
Gareth Evans's "Things Without the Mind" (1980) is the canonical reply. Evans argues that Strawson's reconstruction is insufficient: the master-sound device delivers at best qualitative regularities, not numerical re-identification, and so the auditory analogue does not yield genuine objective particulars. Evans's deeper point, frequently invoked in current debates, is that spatial thinking is constitutively bound up with thought about a mind-independent world, so that auditory content can underwrite objectivity only insofar as it is interwoven with spatial cognition — paradigmatically, with the subject's egocentric awareness of bodily location. Evans's discussion is taken up by Quassim Cassam ("Space and Objective Experience," 2005, in Bermúdez ed.), Naomi Eilan, Bill Brewer and José Luis Bermúdez in various contributions to the Spatial Representation/Body and Self volumes (1993, 1995, 1998); Anil Gomes ("Unity and Objectivity in Strawson and Cassam") has more recently re-examined the transcendental shape of the argument. Paul Snowdon's *Strawson* (2006) and Gary Hatfield on spatial perception revisit the framing assumptions.
W. D. Hart's "Existence Unperceived" (LRB 1981) is a still-readable précis of the Evans–Strawson exchange. James Van Cleve's "Touch, Sound, and Things Without the Mind" (*Metaphilosophy* 2006) usefully juxtaposes Strawson's auditory case with Reid's tactile thought experiment, asking whether the relevant question is one of psychological possibility, conceptual possibility, or normative warrant.
### 2. Berkeley and the Inheritance Picture
Berkeley's *New Theory of Vision* (1709) and *Three Dialogues* (1713) supply the standard background against which contemporary spatial-audition debates are pitched. On the orthodox reading, Berkeley holds that the proper objects of each sense are non-spatial sensible qualities and that spatial content is acquired only through associative links with touch and bodily movement; sounds, accordingly, are heard as located only derivatively, by inheritance from the locations of their typically encountered sources. The Berkeleian inheritance model still surfaces, sometimes explicitly, in views on which audition lacks intrinsic spatial content but presents sounds-as-related-to-sources whose locations are fixed by visual or proprioceptive cues.
### 3. Mid-Twentieth-Century Ordinary-Language Discussions
Brian O'Shaughnessy's "The Location of a Perceived Sound" (*Mind*, 1957), J. M. E. Malpas's discussion (1965), J. O. Urmson (1968) and P. M. S. Hacker (1987) all distinguish a strong from a weak sense of "locatedness." On the strong reading, sounds are presented at an address — direction *and* distance, possibly in allocentric coordinates. On the weak reading, sounds are merely presented as "coming from" somewhere, that is, as directional without being fully located. This distinction, made vivid in the Casati and Dokic SEP entry, is reanimated in more recent work by O'Callaghan, Nudds, Di Bona and Wilson.
### 4. O'Shaughnessy's Mature Position
Brian O'Shaughnessy's *Consciousness and the World* (2000), particularly chapters 13–15, defends a striking peripheral-proximal view: although the sound originates at a distance, and although audition presents direction (and at times even place) of origin, "the sound that we hear is nonetheless where we are" (2000: 447). The proposal is intended to do justice both to the directional content of auditory experience and to the dependence of that experience upon the energy patterns that arrive at the ear. The phenomenological distinction it presupposes — that one can hear a sound's coming from elsewhere without thereby hearing the sound *as* elsewhere — has proven controversial; O'Callaghan (2007, 2010) treats it as straightforwardly mistaken about the phenomenology of locational hearing, while Nudds (2009, 2010), Wadle (2025) and others find in it the seed of more defensible aspatialist positions.
## II. The Metaphysics of Sounds: Where, and What?
The most efficient organising principle for the metaphysics of sounds, set out by Casati and Dokic in their 1994 *La philosophie du son* and refined in their SEP entry (latterly co-authored with Di Bona), is the spatial taxonomy: proximal, medial, distal, and aspatial theories, each available in event, property, dispositional and individual variants.
### 1. Proximal Theories
Proximal theories — sounds as sensations (Maclachlan 1989) or as proximal stimuli at the ear (O'Shaughnessy 2000) — face the standard publicity objection. Sounds (unlike headaches) are public, multiply audible, and survive their not being heard, as Casati and Dokic and O'Callaghan emphasise. There is no philosophical consensus on the proximal end of the spectrum, although it persists in indirect-realist quarters and in the wave theorist's fallback position when phenomenological objections to medial views are pressed.
### 2. Medial / Wave Theories
The wave view — sounds *are* longitudinal compression disturbances propagating through an elastic medium — has the imprimatur of physical acoustics and is endorsed by, among others, Pasnau's contemporary critics, Sorensen (2008), Nudds (2009, 2010, 2018), Kalderon (2017), Meadows (2018), and most thoroughly Calvin Kwok in *Hearing Waves* (2020 dissertation; "Do We Hear Compression Waves?" *Inquiry* 2024). The standard argument against wave views, originally pressed by Pasnau ("What Is Sound?" *Philosophical Quarterly* 1999), is that sounds are not heard to *travel*: a missile-like sound speeding towards the ear is exactly what one does *not* hear when one hears the drumming across the street. If sounds were waves, locational auditory experience would be massively illusory.
Several lines of response have refined the wave view. Nudds (2009, "Sounds and Space"; 2010, "What Are Auditory Objects?") argues that auditory experience is best understood as not representing sound location at all but as representing source location *via* the auditory representation of frequency-component patterns, so the constraint of phenomenological fidelity is met without requiring sounds themselves to be heard at the source. Mark Eli Kalderon (*Sympathy in Perception*, 2017) develops a strikingly different defence: auditory phenomenology is essentially "emanative," presenting sound as an expanding spherical disturbance propagating in all directions from its source. Distal-locational appearances are reinterpreted as appearances of *sources*, not sounds. Di Bona (in the SEP entry and "Why Space Matters to an Understanding of Sound," 2019, in Cheng, Deroy and Spence eds. *Spatial Senses*) has questioned whether emanative phenomenology can carve cleanly between hearing sound location and hearing source location.
### 3. Distal Theories
Distal theories locate sounds at or near their resonating sources. They divide along an orthogonal property/event axis.
**Property views.** Robert Pasnau's "What Is Sound?" (1999) and "Sensible Qualities: The Case of Sound" (*JHP* 2000) argue that sounds are properties of vibrating objects (the bell *has* its sound), identical with or supervenient upon the categorical bases of Lockean sound-powers. John Kulvicki's "The Nature of Noise" (*Philosophers' Imprint*, 2008) modifies this in a dispositional direction: sounds are stable dispositional properties — dispositions to vibrate when "thwacked" — that distinguish "having" a sound from "making" one, on analogy with colour. Pendaran Roberts ("Turning Up the Volume on the Property View of Sound," *Inquiry* 2017) and Vivian Mizrahi ("Recorded Sounds and Auditory Media," *Philosophia* 2020) develop variants. Jorge Luis Méndez-Martínez ("If Sounds Were Dispositions," *Organon F* 2020) provides a careful taxonomy of dispositional accounts. Jason Leddington ("What We Hear," 2014; "Sounds Fully Simplified," *Analysis* 2019; "The Event-Property View of Sounds," *Inquiry* 2025) reroutes the property view: sounds are properties not of objects but of the *source events* (collisions, strummings) in which objects participate.
**Event views.** Roberto Casati and Jérôme Dokic's *La philosophie du son* (1994) — its argument condensed in the various editions of the Stanford "Sounds" entry — defends the **Located Event Theory**: sounds are monadic events located at their sources, identical with or supervening on vibration processes there, with the medium serving as informational channel rather than as bearer. Casey O'Callaghan's *Sounds: A Philosophical Theory* (2007) defends a closely related, but distinct, **Relational Event View**: sounds are events in which a vibrating body disturbs the surrounding medium; sounds are particulars, individuated by sources, and distally located but constitutively dependent on a medium. The crucial 2013 article by Casati, Di Bona and Dokic ("The Ockhamization of the Event Sources of Sound," *Analysis*) presses an Ockhamist simplification: O'Callaghan's account multiplies entities (a sound *event* distinct from the *source event*), and a more parsimonious view simply identifies the sound with the source event. Leddington's "Sounds Fully Simplified" (*Analysis* 2019) responds that a still cleaner option — sounds as audible *properties* of source events — does the work better.
Mohan Matthen's "On the Diversity of Auditory Objects" (*Review of Philosophy and Psychology* 2010) sits awkwardly across these classifications, arguing for a pluralism of auditory objects (sounds, melodies, harmonies, source events) that resists reduction to a single ontological category. Nudds's "Sounds and Space" (in O'Callaghan and Nudds eds. 2009) and "What Are Auditory Objects?" (*RPP* 2010) defend an aspatial individual view: sounds are abstract, particularised frequency-component patterns whose primary perceptual role is to deliver information about their (genuinely located) sources.
### 4. Aspatial and Restricted-Aspatialist Views
Strict aspatialism — that sounds have no spatial properties at all, or that auditory experience does not represent spatial properties of sounds — has had occasional defenders (Scruton 1997; in more nuanced form, Nudds 2010). The most carefully demarcated recent statement is Douglas Wadle's "Restricted Auditory Aspatialism" (*BJPS* 2025), which argues that there is a recognisable, if minimal, notion of audition for which the standard phenomenological objections to aspatialism — that we obviously hear sounds as located — do not apply, and which leaves room for plural notions of audition.
### 5. Echoes, Vacuums and the Auditory Constancy Problem
Several arguments have functioned as test cases. The **echo argument** plays a central role in *Sounds: A Philosophical Theory*: echoes are intermittently rather than continuously experienced, which O'Callaghan's "Primary Sound Account of Echoes" (PSAE) handles by treating echoes as spatially and temporally distinct events identical or causally linked with the primary sound. Gregory Fowler ("Against the Primary Sound Account of Echoes," *Analysis* 2013), and Jeff Hawley's continuation, push back on the workability of PSAE. The **argument from vacuum** (Berkeley's bell in the air-pump) has been variously deployed for and against wave theory; Casati and Dokic deflate it as question-begging. The **distal-volume argument** (Casati and Dokic, O'Callaghan) — that a loud sound heard at a distance can be perceptually identified as loud while the proximal wave amplitude is small — is one of the principal levers used against medial theories.
The **constancy problem** for audition (parallel to size and colour constancy in vision) has only recently received sustained philosophical attention; it features in O'Callaghan's *Beyond Vision* and in work by Matthew Nudds, James Stazicker (especially "Attention and Determinacy"), and Vincent Bergeron and Benj Hellie (in the *Sensory Individuals* volume). It bears on whether what one is hearing must be located distally if loudness constancy is to be vindicated as veridical.
## III. The Phenomenology of Auditory Space
### 1. Locational vs Directional Hearing
A central issue, traceable to Malpas and O'Shaughnessy, is whether auditory experience presents locations or merely directions. O'Callaghan's "Perceiving the Locations of Sounds" (*RPP* 2010) defends three claims: (i) auditory experience has spatial content (direction *and* distance); (ii) we hear the locations of things and events by hearing the locations of their sounds; (iii) sounds are auditorily presented as having relatively stable distal locations. He explicitly rejects Strawsonian scepticism. Nudds's "Sounds and Space" (2009) sits at the opposite pole: auditory experience presents the locations of *sources*, not of sounds, and only by way of an essentially aspatial representation of frequency-component patterns. Casati and Dokic's "Some Varieties of Spatial Hearing" (in *Sounds and Perception*, 2009) maps the conceptual space.
### 2. The Auditory Field
Whether there is anything that deserves the name of an *auditory field* — analogous in structure to the visual field — has become a focal recent debate. The sceptical tradition (Strawson, O'Shaughnessy in some moods, Tye, Martin's "Sight and Touch" 1992) holds that audition lacks the right kind of spatial structure: there are no auditory analogues of edges, occlusion, figure-ground in space, persisting unfilled regions. Keith A. Wilson's "The Auditory Field: The Spatial Character of Auditory Experience" (*Ergo* 2023) is the most thorough contemporary defence of an auditory field. Wilson argues that audition presents not just discrete sound-locations but a structured, bounded, all-around acoustic environment within which sources, reverberations and silences are spatially organised; the phenomenology, on his view, is not less but more spatially rich than the visual field in some respects (audition, unlike vision, surrounds the listener). Tony Cheng ("Spatial Representations in Sensory Modalities," *Mind & Language* 2022) provides a wider taxonomic framing.
### 3. Egocentric vs Allocentric Auditory Frames
Audition is paradigmatically egocentric — left and right of the head, in front, behind, above — but allocentric framings ("the siren over by Pier 3") are clearly available, plausibly dependent on integration with vision and proprioception. Empirical and philosophical work converges on the view that primary auditory cortex represents source locations primarily in head-centred coordinates, but that allocentric representations are constructible. The philosophically salient point is that audition, more than vision, makes egocentric framing essential and inescapable: the "behind" of the auditory field, unlike the "behind" of the visual field, is itself audibly given. Skrzypulec's "Egocentric Content and the Complex Subject" extends this to argue that egocentric directional content presupposes representation of the perceiving subject as a complex bodily structure.
### 4. Hearing Objects, Sources and Spaces
The question what we hear, when we hear sounds, has shifted decisively in the last fifteen years from a sound-centred to a source- and environment-centred picture. Nudds's "Experiencing the Production of Sounds" (*EJP* 2001) initiates the contemporary discussion, arguing that auditory experience presents sounds as produced by sources, and that this requires more than one sense to be operative. O'Callaghan's "Hearing Properties, Effects, or Parts?" (*PAS* 2011), reprinted in *Beyond Vision* (2017), defends a mereological picture: sounds are perceptually presented as parts of larger source-involving events, so hearing a sound and hearing the slamming of a door are not metaphysically separated by a causal gulf but linked as part to whole. Nick Young's own work — particularly "Hearing Spaces" (*AJP* 2017), "Hearing Objects and Events" (*Philosophical Studies* 2018) and "Sounds as Properties" (*Thought* 2021) — pushes the argument further: through hearing reverberation we represent volumes of empty space, not just sounds; and we hear material objects as enduring through their participation in source events. The author's own "soundless" view, sketched in his *Against Hearing Sounds* dissertation and subsequent work, holds that there is no good reason to suppose audition represents sounds (waves, vibrations, etc.) at all; it represents vibrating objects, their temporally extended activities, and the acoustic spaces they occupy.
Other contributions in this lineage: Jason Leddington's "What We Hear" (2014) develops a Heideggerian/direct-realist account on which sound sources are heard *directly*, not by inference from their sounds. Elvira Di Bona, "Listening to the Space of Music" and "The Spatial Experience of Musical Sources" (2018), generalises a model of source-spatial perception from non-musical to musical contexts. Brian Glenney's work on auditory perception and modality, and Tom Roberts on absence and olfaction (*Pacific Philosophical Quarterly* 2016), supply parallels in adjacent modalities.
### 5. Reverberation, Acoustic Environments and the Perception of Empty Space
Whether one can hear empty space is itself a flashpoint. Young's "Hearing Spaces" (2017) argues yes: in hearing sounds reverberate one auditorily represents the volume surrounding one. Nudds, by contrast, denies this. Clare Mac Cumhaill's "Perceiving Immaterial Paths" (*PPR* 2015) defends a realist view of perceived empty space that has been extended to the auditory case. The neighbouring debate about silence is closely related.
### 6. Silence, Absence and Negative Auditory Experience
Roy Sorensen's "Hearing Silence: The Perception and Introspection of Absences" (in *Seeing Dark Things*, 2008) gave the cognitive/perceptual debate about silence its modern shape: silence is heard, because silences (absences of sound) cause our experiences of them. Ian Phillips's "Hearing and Hallucinating Silence" (in Macpherson and Platchias eds., *Hallucination*, 2013) urges that to vouchsafe genuine perception of silence we must reject the austere relational picture of conscious experience that motivates the cognitive theory; he proposes either a temporal-field view (auditory experience has a temporal field within which absences register) or a Moorean account in terms of the capacity to listen in absence of sound. Matthew Soteriou's "The Perception of Absence, Space and Time" (in *Perception, Causation, and Objectivity*, 2011) treats hearing silence as hearing an interval of time as empty of audible sounds. Phillip John Meadows ("Experiencing Silence," *CJP* 2020) and Laura Gow ("Empty Space, Silence, and Absence," *CJP* 2021) push back against the Sorensen/Phillips/Soteriou cluster. Błażej Skrzypulec's "Silence Perception and Spatial Content" (*AJP* 2022) develops the further claim that experiences of silence have egocentric *spatial* content: silence is heard as filling empty directions. Tom Roberts on olfactory absences provides the most-discussed cross-modal analogue. The empirical paper by Goh, Phillips and Firestone ("The Perception of Silence," *PNAS* 2023) brought this debate to wider attention.
## IV. Multimodality, Crossmodal Effects and the Spatial Senses
### 1. Ventriloquism and Auditory–Visual Spatial Binding
The ventriloquism effect — visual capture of auditory location — is the pre-eminent test case for accounts of multimodal spatial integration. O'Callaghan's "Seeing What You Hear: Cross-Modal Illusions and Perception" (*Philosophical Issues* 2008), "Object Perception: Vision and Audition" (*Philosophy Compass* 2008), and his subsequent treatment in *Beyond Vision* (2017) and *A Multisensory Philosophy of Perception* (2019) develop an account on which cross-modal binding is genuinely perceptual, not merely cognitive: features from distinct modalities (auditory and visual location, in the ventriloquism case) are bound together in a unified multisensory representation. Kevin Connolly's "Multisensory Perception as an Associative Learning Process" pushes back, urging that some apparent binding is better understood as learned association.
Tim Crane on the contents of experience and Fiona Macpherson, especially her "Cross-Modal Experiences" (*PAS* 2011) and subsequent writings on individuating the senses, supply the wider methodological frame within which audition's spatial content interacts with vision's. Macpherson stresses that what counts as a sense modality, and what counts as a multimodal experience, is itself shaped by phenomenological, representational and processing criteria that cut differently in different cases. Brian Soucek's work on aesthetic perception and modality complements this. Robert Eamon Briscoe's two-part survey "Multisensory Processing and Perceptual Consciousness" (*Philosophy Compass* 2016, 2017) is a useful entry point.
The McGurk effect, although primarily a debate about speech perception, bears on spatial hearing insofar as it dramatises the dependence of auditory phenomenology on visual input; O'Callaghan's *Beyond Vision* essays on speech perception and "The Multisensory Character of Perception" (*JPhil* 2015) argue that some auditory experiences are constitutively shaped by vision.
### 2. Multisensory Objects and the Spatial Senses Volume
Tony Cheng, Ophelia Deroy and Charles Spence eds. *Spatial Senses* (Routledge, 2019) collects the most concentrated recent body of philosophical work on spatial perception across modalities, including Di Bona on space and sound. Kevin Connolly's *Perceptual Learning* (2019) and Mohan Matthen's edited *Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Perception* (2015) include extensive treatment of multisensory spatial integration. O'Callaghan's "Objects for Multisensory Perception" (*Philosophical Studies* 2016) and "Grades of Multisensory Awareness" (*Mind & Language* 2017) defend a graded picture: multisensory awareness ranges from co-conscious unisensory experiences to genuinely multisensory features (rhythm, motion, flavour) that no single sense can deliver.
### 3. Common-Factor and Differentiation Questions
Whether there is a "common factor" in spatial perception across modalities — a single, modality-neutral spatial content into which audition, vision and touch all feed — is a live question, with Evans's discussion serving as a touchstone. Susanna Siegel on the contents of visual experience, Mark Eli Kalderon on form, and Matthew Soteriou's *The Mind's Construction* all bear obliquely on the question of how unitary the spatial perceptual content of distinct modalities is, even when they converge on the same allocentric location.
### 4. Predictive Processing and Bayesian Integration
Predictive processing accounts (Andy Clark's *Surfing Uncertainty* 2016; Jakob Hohwy's *The Predictive Mind* 2013) treat ventriloquism and other cross-modal phenomena as Bayesian-optimal integration of sensory signals weighted by precision. Ophelia Deroy's work with Charles Spence and others situates these accounts within the philosophy of perception. The philosophical questions concern whether predictive-processing models bear on the *constitution* of perceptual content or merely on its processing substrate, and whether they should be reconciled with relationalist accounts of perceptual experience. There is no settled view; explicit engagement with predictive processing in the philosophy of *spatial* hearing remains comparatively underdeveloped.
## V. Auditory Objects, Streams and Engagement with Bregman
Albert Bregman's *Auditory Scene Analysis* (1990) introduced "auditory objects" as the products of perceptual segmentation along pitch-and-time dimensions. The philosophical engagement with Bregman became sustained around 2007–10. Nudds's "What Are Auditory Objects?" (*RPP* 2010), O'Callaghan's "Object Perception: Vision and Audition" (2008), and the special issue of *Review of Philosophy and Psychology* edited by Bullot and Egré (2010) — including contributions by Matthen, Nudds, O'Callaghan, Kubovy and Schutz — investigate whether auditory objects are genuine perceptual particulars. Mohan Matthen's "On the Diversity of Auditory Objects" (2010) and his work in *Sensory Individuals* (Mroczko-Wąsowicz and Grush eds., OUP 2023) defend a pluralism about auditory individuals. Skrzypulec's "Visual Endurance and Auditory Perdurance" (*Erkenntnis* 2018) takes up the suggestion (O'Callaghan's) that vision treats objects as enduring while audition treats them as perduring, arguing that this contrast is overdrawn.
A core contention here is that auditory objects are individuated *primarily* by pitch and time, with space serving an external structuring role — whereas visual objects are individuated by space, with time as the external frame. This asymmetry between vision and audition (space as internal/external, time as external/internal) remains philosophically generative.
## VI. Time and Audition
Because sounds are typically taken to be intrinsically temporal — they unfold; they have an attack, sustain and decay; their identity is bound up with patterns of change — debates about temporal phenomenology and about sound metaphysics are deeply linked. Jonathan Cohen's "Sounds and Temporality" (*Oxford Studies in Metaphysics* 5, 2010) argues against the claim that sounds are temporal in a way that distinguishes them from colours and other secondary qualities, in defence of a unified treatment of sensible qualities. Di Bona and Santarcangelo's *A Philosophy of Sound* (2018) discusses the temporal/colour parallel at length, concluding that sounds and colours differ temporally chiefly in the role time plays in stream-segregation. O'Callaghan's "Sounds and Events" (in *Sounds and Perception*, 2009) presses the contrary case: sounds, qua events, are essentially time-extended in a way that resists assimilation to property metaphysics. Nick Young, in his recent work on temporal experience, develops the idea that hearing a temporally extended event is hearing an object as perduring through time, departing from event-based models of vision. Ian Phillips's work on temporal experience and Christoph Hoerl's writings on Husserl and the temporal field connect these issues to the wider literature on the specious present.
## VII. Speech, Music and Special-Object Considerations
While not always treated under "spatial hearing," speech perception bears on the spatial debate insofar as the spatial properties of speech sounds (their apparent emanation from a speaker) are entangled with their semantic and sub-lexical content. O'Callaghan's *Beyond Vision* essays on speech, and Casey O'Callaghan and Brian Hill's recent collaborative work, extend his multimodal account to speech. Roger Scruton's "Sounds as Secondary Objects and Pure Events" (in *Sounds and Perception*, 2009; also *The Aesthetics of Music* 1997) defends an idiosyncratic position on which musical sounds belong to a non-physical "acousmatic" realm — a position generally regarded as too revisionary, although it raises pointed questions about how spatial content interacts with musical attention. Di Bona's work on listening to musical space ("Listening to the Space of Music") is one of the few sustained attempts to bring spatial-hearing theory to bear on aesthetic experience.
## VIII. The State of the Field and Open Questions
As of 2024–26, several debates remain unresolved or actively contested.
**The phenomenological constraint.** The methodological role of phenomenology in adjudicating between metaphysical theories of sounds remains deeply unsettled. Strong-fidelity views (O'Callaghan) treat phenomenology as a near-decisive constraint; weaker readings (Nudds) treat it as one consideration among many; revisionist views (Kalderon, Wadle) propose that the phenomenology has been described too narrowly or too widely. There is no convergence on what counts as a faithful phenomenological description, particularly in cases of constancy, reverberation, and silence.
**The auditory field.** Wilson's 2023 defence has reopened the question whether audition has the structural features required to underwrite a "field." Tye, Martin and Macpherson's earlier scepticism remains a lively counter-position. Whether audition presents a *bounded* field (parallel to the visual field's edges) or merely a structure of foreground sources within an unbounded surround is still debated.
**Sounds, sources and the "what we hear" question.** The trend in the last decade has been towards source-inclusive views (we hear sources, sometimes by hearing sounds, sometimes directly). The Berkeleian, sound-only view is now a minority position. But the precise relation — causal, mereological, identity-based, dispositional — between sounds, sources and source events is still open. Leddington's event-property view (*Inquiry* 2025) and Young's object-property view (2021) represent the most articulated recent property-side moves; the Casati–Di Bona–Dokic Ockhamised event view and O'Callaghan's part-whole event view remain the principal event-side competitors.
**Aspatialism redux.** Wadle's "Restricted Auditory Aspatialism" (*BJPS* 2025) shows that aspatialism, far from being a position only the unwary maintain, can be carefully demarcated. Whether such a restricted aspatialism is genuinely a position about audition, or only about a methodological idealisation, is a matter on which the field is divided.
**Silence and absence.** The Phillips/Sorensen/Soteriou/Meadows/Gow/Skrzypulec literature has not stabilised, and the recent empirical intervention by Goh, Phillips and Firestone (2023) is likely to provoke further discussion. Whether hearing silence is genuinely auditory perception, whether it has spatial content, and whether it is a kind of perception of absences or of intervals are all still live.
**Multisensory integration and the unity of spatial perception.** Whether ventriloquism, the precedence effect and similar phenomena are best explained by genuine multisensory perceptual content, by sub-personal binding, or by associative learning is contested. Predictive-processing reframings of these debates have been only partially absorbed into the mainstream of analytic philosophy of perception.
**Cross-modal asymmetries.** The asymmetry between vision (space-internal/time-external) and audition (time-internal/space-external) — which structures O'Callaghan's mereological account — has been challenged by Skrzypulec and by Di Bona and Santarcangelo. Whether this asymmetry is fundamental or an artefact of the way we set up the comparison is unsettled.
**Animal and atypical audition.** Echolocation (Thompson, Hutto, and others), profoundly deaf experience, and non-human animal audition (treated in Joëlle Proust's work and in some essays in *Sensory Individuals*) supply test cases that have only begun to be exploited in arguments about the constitutive features of spatial hearing.

The Bloomsbury Handbook tradition on sound is largely oriented towards sound studies rather than analytic philosophy of perception, but Bull and Cobussen's *Bloomsbury Handbook of Sonic Methodologies* (2020) contains some philosophically engaged contributions.
## IX. Concluding Observations
Two structural points are worth registering. First, the metaphysics of sounds and the phenomenology of auditory space genuinely interpenetrate: distal-event views are motivated by, and constrained by, the apparent locational content of auditory experience, while wave views (in their newer Kalderon and Nudds variants) survive only by reinterpreting that phenomenology. There is no neat division of labour. Second, the field has shifted noticeably in the last decade away from sound-centric questions ("what are sounds?") towards source-centric, environment-centric, and multisensory questions ("what does audition reveal of the surrounding spatial-causal world?"). The most generative recent work — by O'Callaghan, Nudds, Kalderon, Di Bona, Wilson, Wadle, Skrzypulec, Phillips, Leddington, Young and others — increasingly treats audition's spatial content as a window onto the integrated, multimodal, environmentally embedded perceiver. Strawson's purely auditory world, in this respect, remains the field's foundational thought experiment: not because it has been answered, but because nearly every consequential position can be located by its stance on what such a being could and could not perceive.
