But I think it conflates two things: what causes a perceptual change and the phenomenological character of the change itself. Consider your inverting lenses case. When someone first puts on inverting lenses, they know the world hasn't flipped. They know the lenses did it. They attribute the change to the device. But the structural alteration is still genuinely there — their visual field IS inverted. The world looks upside down. The knowledge that lenses caused it doesn't somehow un-invert the visual field. --- ### 2026-02-08 — Inverting lenses analogy against Fisher's twofoldness — causal knowledge is doxastic not phenomenological > Inverting lenses: You put them on. The visual field inverts. You know the lenses did it. But the inversion is genuinely there as a structural alteration of visual experience. Nobody in the philosophy of perception literature would say that knowing the lenses caused it generates "twofoldness" — awareness of the visual content plus awareness of the representational vehicle. That would be a bizarre description. The structural alteration just IS the phenomenological character of the experience. The causal knowledge is doxastic, not phenomenological. ---
