# movements of the mind intro and main claims **Opening (not a real abstract):** This work would not be possible without my wife, Alison Barth, so at its beginning, I want to thank her. In our youth, we had a “public” debate on a train from Oxford to London, neurobiologist versus philosopher. As we pulled into our stop, an older English gentleman sitting across from us leaned over and said, “I agree with her.” That sums up a lot. There was a difficult period after I left science, lost and unsure of what to do. Alison patiently weathered the storm with me. Since then, we have shared the ups and downs of a rich, wonderful life together, raising two daughters who remind me every time I am with them how their strength, intelligence, and beauty reflect their mother’s.
