The qualification ‘metaphorical’ is used analogously to ‘perceptual’ in the phrase ‘perceptual content’. When writers discuss perceptual content, they do not merely by the use of that phrase commit themselves to the existence of a special kind of content. They may or may not believe in such a special kind, but the terminology itself is neutral. ‘Perceptual content’ indicates a certain kind of embedding of a content, in a perceptual state. Similarly for ‘metaphorical content’: it indicates embedding in a distinctive mental state, one in which something is represented metaphorically-as something else.
