> A final note on *genre* : many contemporary instances belong to mystery or, more precisely, detective fiction, in which the reader is narratologically invited to identify with the detective – a procedure characteristic of postmodernism (e.g., Auster 1987) and developed in later ergodic experiments (Danielewski 2000; Abrams & Dorst 2013). Drawing briefly on Eco (Eco & Sebeok 1983) and Suits (1985), I suggest that this particular class of works sustains a robust sense in which literature can be a game.
