## Highlights
> It’s not that this strange ritual *fixed* me, or anything like that. But it was a genuinely novel and remarkable experience. It was just plain *cathartic* to hear two fake people talk about problems I hadn’t discussed with a lot of real people — especially not with this much specificity and honesty. They — the fake voices generated by a large language model — were touched by what I had written, and could really identify with it, and hearing them talk about it in this manner lightened the load a little. I teared up. It felt like it *helped*. It was more or less the same feeling you get after a particularly meaningful session with a talented therapist. > The most obvious argument a critic could make here is that as this technology improves, it will be deployed widely as a *replacement* for more meaningful human interaction. I’m of two minds about this. On the one hand, there are obvious ethical problems with letting AI take on the role of a full-blown therapist — not least the fact that if it does something that upsets you, who are you supposed to take it up with? I’m going to email Google and tell the billion-dollar company that a feature I chose of my own volition to experiment with upset me? That’s not going to fly.
