- My notes:
- Summary: The puzzle asks if fiction forces specific emotions or if feelings are just personal. Terrone treats fictions as artifacts that shape imaginations and guide emotional judgments. His solution: works prescribe an emotional "tuning" but leave intensity and bodily reactions up to each person.

> (e) Emotions are part of our subjective, idiosyncratic reaction rather than being constitutive of the appropriate response that the work of fiction prescribes. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01k5bvgby941tew5e8wexvw0tx))
> There are many philosophical controversies on the nature of artifacts but at least a basic characterization seems to be common ground in the philosophy of technology. That is, artifacts are *created* entities that perform their *function* in virtue of their *structure* (Houkes and Vermaas 2010; Kroes 2012). From this perspective, creation, structure and function are the three basic dimensions along which artifacts can be conceived and analyzed. > We still have the intuition that one can properly engage with *Hereditary* even though one does not feel emotions such as fear or disgust or discomfort while watching those scenes. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01k5bycfcraq247bqzj8mtsnrp))

> The proposed solution of the puzzle of design leads us to highlight two ways in which artifacts can induce experiences. On the one hand, experiential artifacts can generate mental states that tend to converge regardless of the peculiar individuality of each member of the audience. This arguably is the way in which pictures induce perceptual states and fictions induce imaginative states; a painting provides all viewers with the same perceptual perspective on the same scene, and a novel provided all the readers with the same propositional content to imagine. On the other hand, artifacts just yield "emotional scores", as it were, that each member of the audience is meant to interpret in her own way, thereby generating her own peculiar version of the prescribed mental states. This arguably is the way in which works of fiction generate emotions. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01k5byvtdp32qt61gkgy4hzzb8))
