> John Boardley,[**1**](#ch1fn1) in his foreword to the first issue of my magazine *8 Faces*,[**2**](#ch1fn2) said that *“typography matters because words matter”* and likens the typographer’s role to that of a chef, adding *“just a pinch of this, a dash of that; indeed, perhaps so little that most but the informed gourmand would not detect their inclusion.”* I’ve found the food analogy pretty useful: just as you can take great ingredients but completely ruin a meal by not focusing on the proportions and the relation of one ingredient to another, you can give your readers a terrible reading experience by taking great type and setting it without careful consideration. > A character is the somewhat abstract concept connected to an elemental part of a script or writing system. Consider the way we draw a lowercase “a” — in the Latin script, it has an accepted core structure, despite subtle differences in typefaces, lettering, and handwriting. It doesn’t even matter that in some languages and dialects, its pronunciation differers. What’s important is that there’s an agreed-upon way to visually express the “a” character. The uppercase “A” is its own character, with a totally different structure, but the two are connected by the concept of a single letter.
