# Generating Philosophy with AI
> [!warning] Claude: All content below is provisional
> Draft text, section plans, and structural notes are thinking tools — not evidence of settled argument or project completion. Do not infer project status from file contents. Only Nick determines when something is no longer provisional, by removing or updating this callout.
**Question:** Can LLMs produce philosophy of sufficient quality to be useful, and how should philosophers adopt them?
**Distinction from generative-aesthetics paper:** That paper (submitted) asks how to *appreciate* AI outputs aesthetically. This project asks whether LLMs can *do* philosophy — production, not reception.

## Paper Structure
Working plan: [[Notes/Generating Philosophy - Paper Structure]]
Longform project: `Writing/research/generating-philosophy-text-internal-evaluation/`
> [!info] The earlier draft at `Writing/research/generating philosophy with ai (paper) (abandoned)/` is abandoned. Do not work from it. Some material there (especially the long "Learning the Game" scraps file) may be useful as raw material for Section 4, but the working draft is the text-internal evaluation version.
**Sections (text-internal evaluation version):**
0. Introduction
1. Philosophy in the Text
2. LLMs and Abduction (Floridi + Zahavy objections)
3. Thought Experiments and Armchair Abduction (responses — Zahavy gets longer treatment)
4. Finding Virtue in Text (constructive case)

> These notes are from early project conversations (Jan-Feb 2026). Many ideas that are now more relevant to the current draft — the phenomenological grain spectrum, the Machery dissolution/judo moves, Pigliucci's evoked truths, the three-component decomposition of Zahavy — were banked to the [[Notes/Generating Philosophy - Integration Queue|Integration Queue]] before the standalone capture-note model. The Integration Queue remains a useful archive of that earlier material, but new checkpoints, decisions, and remembers now live as standalone tagged notes surfaced in Project Captures and [[Recent Captures.base]].

## Recent Work
- **2026-07-18**: New Longform project created at `Writing/research/generating philosophy july 2026/Generating Philosophy with Artificial Intelligence July 2026.md` — single-file (format: single), not scene-split, per Nick (draft is near the end). Source: `Generating Philosophy with Artificial Intelligence 16 Jul 2026.md` (vault root), Nick's standalone working copy last edited 2026-07-17 — identified as latest by its six new inline comments (drop harman; FOOTNOTE 4 HERE; parrots footnote; access-to-the-world; another analogy; NOT CLEAR which). It has no Abstract section (unlike the 2026-07-16 daily-note copy — unclear whether removal was deliberate). The root copy was left in place. ~11,000 words; Conclusion still the `%%Conclusion to be written by NY%%` placeholder; unplaced Appendix kept inline. The daily-note copy was left untouched. This supersedes `generating-philosophy-text-internal-evaluation/` as the working draft location.
- **2026-07-06**: Cleaned the daily-note compiled draft of _Generating Philosophy with Artificial Intelligence_: stripped bold markers, renumbered footnotes globally, added five `TODO: add footnote.` placeholders for missing definitions, removed the duplicate References heading, and exported a Typst PDF to `Documents/Generating Philosophy with Artificial Intelligence.pdf`.
- **2026-06-24**: §2 (abduction) rework reviewed alongside §3 for cross-section coherence. Current §2 draft locates and dissolves Floridi's "facade"/"veneer" charge (missing-nonsense argument: the model avoids senseless explanations as it avoids senseless sentences); runs the grammar→semantic-grammar analogy (Wolfram); deploys Lipton's loveliness/likeliness as the standard for good abduction; uses Salimi et al. 2026 twice (first as seeming to support Floridi, then as scoring the answer not the weighing); adds the kimi hedged-answer exchange (footnote); introduces the world-bound vs "settled from what is already set down" distinction (the car) and crystallises the granted residue as "purchase on the particular case"; closes by handing off to §3 (world-connection) and §4 (elicitation). Found this session file stale against the live draft and updated Context for Next Session accordingly. Analysis of how §3 should track the new §2 done in conversation, not yet folded into the draft.
- **2026-04-21**: Worked on §1 (authorship challenge) in a parallel Claude chat, now saved as [[Clippings/Davies performance theory transposed — §1 authorship challenge]]. The chat develops Davies' performance theory of art as the precise form of the authorship/constitution challenge, transposes it to philosophy, and critiques the transposed view via Davies' own pragmatic constraint (ontology answerable to rationally reconstructed practice). Materials covered: textbook reconstructions as a disanalogy with art (philosophy individuates by argument, not by generative process); Dellsén et al.'s reflective-equilibrium articulation of the aim of philosophy (for-whom conception, putting-in-a-position, public availability, Dr N case); Wittgenstein's therapeutic and Rorty's conversational conceptions treated as reception-side rather than production-side views, and so hospitable to LLM-generated texts. Chat ended with a working bullet plan for §1's second half, still iterating. Scope note: paper takes pillar 3 of Dellsén's account (for-whom + availability) but not pillar 2 (dependence-network explication of understanding), to avoid hostage-taking.
- **2026-03-09**: Explored Pigliucci's "Philosophy as the Evocation of Conceptual Landscapes" (2017) for relevance to generating philosophy project. **Two uses identified:** (1) Pigliucci *clarifies the objection* that LLMs lack real-world grounding: philosophy is "empirically informed evoking" — its axioms come from experience of the world, so if LLMs lack experience, they lack the source of constraints. This gives the "just text" objection precise structure. (2) Pigliucci *provides response resources*: empirical constraints enter philosophy as propositions (Pigliucci calls them "axioms" equivalent to chess rules); propositions are textually encoded; "our best understanding" is communal and articulated; the philosophical corpus is filtered for empirical responsiveness via peer review. **Gap in current manuscript:** existing arguments concern outputs and reasoning, but Pigliucci's point concerns *inputs*. Possible additions: argue empirical inputs are themselves propositional; invoke "our best understanding" as textually encoded; explicitly address axiom-choice problem. PDF extracted to `Attachments/_pigliucci_temp.txt`. Source clipping: [[Clippings/Paper section-by-section summary]] (conversation with Claude analysing the chapter). Longform project for Text-Internal Evaluation approach: `Writing/research/generating-philosophy-text-internal-evaluation/`.
- **2026-02-24**: CEV note converted to Longform project at `Writing/research/generating-philosophy-text-internal-evaluation/`. The "Text-Internal Evaluation" approach is now structured as a 4-scene manuscript: (0) Introduction, (1) Philosophy in the Text, (2) Floridi and Zahavy as Foils, (3) Dialectical Saturation. Introduction bridge paragraph added: addresses practitioner-focused metaphilosophical traditions (Hadot, phenomenologists, Dilthey) by pivoting to contemporary philosophy's textual practices. Revised sentence after semicolon to better characterize footnote 2's traditions. Bridge paragraph acknowledges traditions neutrally ("If these metaphilosophical traditions are right, the question is settled") then pivots to text-focused evaluation without dismissing practitioner views. **Note: This is exploratory work only.** The entire approach could be abandoned — it's being developed in parallel to understand which argumentative arc is more effective. Not a commitment to this structure.
- **2026-02-23**: CEV exploration of alternative Section 1 approach ("Philosophy in the Text"): argues philosophical texts are the work itself (not reports of prior insights), using Watson/Crick vs Kripke comparison. Synthesizes Dellsén/Williamson/Bengson into coherent account of understanding-enabling textual properties. Multiple complete rewrites addressing: (1) opening directly with text thesis rather than Watson/Crick, (2) avoiding "philosophical contributions" jargon, (3) avoiding "finding" wordplay, (4) avoiding ownership framing in Kripke paragraph, (5) synthesizing theorists into single paragraph rather than listing. Final version checked against nick-analytic-voice skill examples. Saved as [[Notes/Generating Philosophy - Text-Internal Evaluation (CEV).md]] — alternative to current draft's Floridi + Zahavy Section 1. This approach focuses on text-internal evaluation standards rather than abduction/reasoning arguments.
- **2026-02-12**: Section 1 rewritten from scratch after multiple failed iterations. Now presents Floridi et al. AND Zahavy (two arguments that LLMs cannot do abduction) with an abduction/IBE introduction grounded in Lipton's generation/selection distinction. 12 paragraphs, 8 verified block quotes (Lipton, Floridi ×4, Zahavy ×3). Structure: abduction intro (¶2-3) → Floridi exposition including zeroth-order abduction, feedback loop, weak/strong abduction nuance, provenance question (¶F1-F4) → Zahavy exposition including E→A Jump, manipulative abduction, Chinese Rooms (¶Z1-Z3) → convergence on philosophy's textual medium (¶C1-C2). Source extractions used: `_floridi_temp.txt`, `_zahavy_temp.txt`, `_lipton_temp.txt` (all in Attachments/). Contemplation workflow proved effective: exhaustive source reading → detailed options → Nick's decisions → write from scratch.
- **2026-02-02**: Rewrote Sections 1-3 with full prose (not just plans). Section 3 completely restructured according to 13-point plan developed in [[Web Clippings/ChatGPT 2|ChatGPT conversation]]: now integrates Bengson et al. methodology book (method as "engine of inquiry", Tri-Level Method criteria) with Walton argumentation schemes. Section 3 arc: publicly checkable norms → method-level criteria from Bengson → argument-level schemes from Walton → "learn the game" thesis → minimal prompts trigger competence → Floridi's "abductive appearance" reframed. Writing session with Claudian; analytic philosophy style skill applied throughout.
- **2026-02-01**: Created extended plans for Sections 0-3: organized all extracted quotations (Dellsén, Bengson, Floridi, Williamson, Walton) into argumentative sequences with connecting prose. ~80 block quotes across four sections. Format: prose paragraphs alternating with block quotes, no subsections. These are plans showing argument flow with quotes in place, not finished drafts.
- **2026-01-31**: Developed detailed paper structure with Claude; created longform project with 6 scene files; synchronized plan note with scene titles
- **2026-01-30**: Extracted 4 notes from new ChatGPT conversation on Floridi/Williamson/constraint structure; tagged source conversation; updated session
- **2026-01-28 (evening)**: Created session infrastructure; developed saturation thesis thread; connected to Walton's argument schemas
- **2026-01-28 (afternoon)**: Extracted 8 additional notes from Floridi chat; cleaned up `#generative-aesthetics` vs `#generating-philosophy` tagging
- **2026-01-28 (morning)**: Topical breakdown of Floridi chat; identified argumentative threads

## Context for Next Session
The working draft is at `Writing/research/generating-philosophy-text-internal-evaluation/`. The earlier draft at the `(abandoned)` folder is not in use.
> [!important] 2026-06-24 — current draft state (supersedes the March status notes below where they conflict)
> The §2 rework this week moved the draft ahead of this file. The March §3 decisions no longer all match the live text. Read this block first.
**Section 2 — current draft state (June 24):** Reworked. Locates and dissolves Floridi's "facade"/"veneer" charge via the missing-nonsense argument; grammar→semantic-grammar analogy (Wolfram); Lipton loveliness/likeliness as the standard for good abduction; Salimi et al. 2026 deployed twice (seems to support Floridi, then: the scores measure the answer, not the weighing); kimi hedged-answer exchange (footnote); the car as world-bound abduction vs much philosophical abduction "settled from what is already set down"; granted residue crystallised as "purchase on the particular case"; closes by handing off to §3 (world-connection) and §4 (elicitation). Footnote [wm] defers "world models in the sense now disputed" to §3.
**Section 3 — current draft state (June 24):** Two challenges (from experience, from connecting to the world), one reply: the materials philosophy takes from world and experience are set down in words / articulated, which the model works on as any philosopher does. Live content: Floridi (no world-relation); Zahavy (Einstein elevator, "sensory agency"); Mary (Jackson) used as the worked thought-experiment case; Pigliucci + Smolin evocation as the section's framework; Lewis (1988) inside the Mary discussion; Nagel's bat; Merleau-Ponty as the residue (the model can't be first to set down what only first-person attention yields). Note-to-self still present on disambiguating "world models."
**Diverges from the March §3 decisions (confirm whether deliberate or drift):**
- Twin Earth: March kept it as the worked case for how thought experiments function; draft drops it, and Mary now does that job (March reserved Mary for the availability spectrum, not this role).
- Machery: March "under reconsideration"; draft cuts it.
- Availability continuum + "repository of secondhand experiences": not built in the draft (Mary and Merleau-Ponty as two points, not a graded line).
- World models: not yet integrated into the conclusion (consistent with March intent; outstanding). §2's [wm] footnote now makes this a cross-section debt §3 owes.
**Coherence items surfaced (June 24, Claude's analysis — provisional, parallel, not ranked):**
- §2 now pre-states the claim §3 goes on to defend ("philosophical abduction doesn't wait upon the world") and hands off explicitly; §3 could open as a continuation rather than a fresh start, and could carry Enrico's parallel form (§2: philosophy in the text without abduction in the mind; §3: without embodied phenomenology in the mind).
- Term drift: §2 intro "phenomenology" vs §3 title / §0 roadmap "experience" — standardise.
- §3 ¶10 "the back-and-forth the previous section described" — §2 does not describe the literature's back-and-forth (that is §0/§1); re-anchor.
- §2 summary says "genuine philosophy"; the paper's coin is "worth reading" — align.
- The elevator/Mary split risks re-importing the cut "physics route vs philosophy route" framing; locating the difference in verification (what settles the claim) rather than route (how the hypothesis is generated) keeps §2's gain without it.
- Two metaphilosophies (Williamson abduction in §2; Pigliucci/Smolin evocation in §3) — possible bridge: evocation supplies the explananda, abduction chooses the explanans; the world-models substrate point (physics needs a physical substrate; philosophy's substrate is the conceptual landscape, already in the corpus) connects them.
- Two granted residues (§2 "purchase on the particular case"; §3 first-person origination) — could be stated together; both sit at the world-interface, neither inside the philosophy.
- Footnotes 2 and 5 pull against each other under §2's sharper definition of abduction (whether Einstein's move is §2-abduction or a differently-named premise-generation).
**Section 3 status (March 24):** The March 20 rewrite (14 paragraphs) was reviewed against Enrico's transcript comments across two parallel sessions (Claude Opus + Codex Opus). The current live file retains the March 20 text but is now understood to need a complete structural overhaul, not patching. Key findings from the review:
**What must be cut (decided):**
- Chinese Room — entirely. Was LLM interpolation from Harnad/Zahavy; misused as a thought experiment example
- Dummett / assertoric content / ingredient sense — entirely. Enrico found it trivial; Nick agrees
- Grief example — entirely
- Kripke, Lewis as standalone examples
- The physics/philosophy distinction framing ("the route in physics runs from perceptual experience... the route in philosophy runs from described case...") — LLM contamination. Einstein was doing a thought experiment, not something distinct from philosophy
- The concluding paragraph (line 30) — flagged "completely wrong"
- The "philosophical novelty looks rather different" paragraph (line 28) — flagged "completely wrong" and "entirely LLM inventual"
- Austin as a standalone paragraph — the current Austin examples are fabricated (tungsten, fluorescent, fabric — none are in Sense and Sensibilia). The section has moved away from Austin as a standalone worked example. Phenomenological-articulation point now absorbed into the availability spectrum.
**What must be kept (decided):**
- Williamson opening (brief — bridge from Section 2, not a full exposition)
- Zahavy challenge (properly developed, not rushed)
- Twin Earth (the section's worked case for how philosophical thought experiments function)
- Mary (in the availability spectrum, NOT as illustration of "how thought experiments work")
- Merleau-Ponty (availability spectrum — the phenomenological frontier)
- Pigliucci (massively expanded — becomes the section's theoretical framework; full Smolin/evocation material deployed)
- Machery — role under active reconsideration (see March 25 checkpoint). No longer assumed to be two full paragraphs. Nick is exploring whether a lighter treatment or different framing works better.
- Colour conversation examples (footnote — typography/colour LLM demonstrations of phenomenological competence)
- World models (integrated into conclusion, not tacked on)
**Section's CEV (what it's really trying to do):**
Three questions in sequence:
(A) What are philosophy's inputs? — Zahavy shows physics breakthroughs can require pre-propositional sensory inputs. Does philosophy? Pigliucci: no, philosophy's starting points are propositional.
(B) Do responses to philosophical cases require something non-propositional? — Previously answered via Machery deflation. Now under reconsideration (March 25). A late-emerging alternative: frame the intuitions objection as a PARALLEL to the Zahavy objection (same shape, same reply) rather than deploying Machery's deflationary argument. See March 25 checkpoint for details.
(C) Is the availability of philosophical inputs uniform? — No. Spectrum from trivially available (pain) through textually assessable but experientially concerned (Mary) to genuinely pre-propositional at origin (Merleau-Ponty).
Then: WHY does the asymmetry exist? → World models (physics needs physical substrate for simulation; philosophy's "substrate" is the conceptual landscape, already in the corpus).
**Structural plan status (March 24):** Multiple paragraph plans attempted across both sessions. Nick rejected all as inadequate — problems with ordering, shallowness, editorial comment confused as content, Austin still present when it should be gone, abrupt transitions, world models tacked on rather than integrated. The correct ordering remains under discussion. Nick's instructions: start from the CEV (what is this section really trying to do at its fullest potential?), not from paragraph plans.
**Standing constraints from Enrico's transcript:**
- "This section still needs to be a little more distilled, both in terms of the examples and in terms of the core idea" (line 232)
- Parallel framing with Section 2: "Section two asks: can we have philosophy in the text without abduction in the mind? Section three asks: can we have philosophy in the text without embodied phenomenology in the mind?" (line 312)
- The reply for phenomenology: "descriptions of phenomenological processes are in the corpus" (line 346)
**Section 2 status (March 23):** Reworked in a session based on Enrico's transcript comments. See conversation 2026-03-23-1fa0a396.
**Section arc (rest of paper — updated March 31):**
- **Section 0** (Introduction): Deep Thought condensed to one sentence (full example moves to conclusion/prompting section). GPT-5.2 motivation, practitioner vs text-focused conceptions, Floridi/Zahavy challenges named. Roadmap placeholder still to be filled. Live file updated March 31.
- **Section 1** (The Challenge from Authorship): Restructured March 31. New opening states the authorship challenge through art analogy (philosophy requires a philosopher like art requires an artist — both distinctively human pursuits). Watson/Crick cut (science/philosophy contrast moves to Section 3 with Pigliucci). Putnam paragraph preserved but needs transition from challenge opening (%%comment%% flags this). Dellsén through Deep Blue unchanged. "In sum" paragraph revised (corpus-filtering preview). Two %%comments%% from Nick: (1) Putnam paragraph opens abruptly — needs a bridge from the challenge; (2) check whether detail was lost from the Putnam paragraph.
- **Section 2** (Floridi + virtue-filtered corpus thesis): Reworked March 23. Voice issues flagged throughout.
- **Section 3** (Input availability + Zahavy + phenomenology + Machery): Needs complete structural overhaul (March 24). March 31 Enrico transcript adds: Einstein paragraph should come AFTER Moore and Putnam; present a continuum rather than sharp divide; secondhand experience from non-philosophical texts (literature, diaries, blogs); "repository of secondhand experiences" phrase to be reintroduced.
- **Section 4** (not yet written, nothing settled — see decision note [[Sellars-LLM generality affinity belongs after the defensive sections]]): Possible prompting section. Sellars-LLM generality affinity is the constructive/positive claim and belongs here — the idea that LLMs are suited to philosophy because both are characterised by maximal generality. Deep Thought return. Everything here is provisional.
**Source extractions still in Attachments/**: `_floridi_temp.txt`, `_zahavy_temp.txt`, `_lipton_temp.txt`.
**Banned words:** "textually" / "textual" (hated; find other formulations for the thesis that philosophy works through articulated text rather than embodied encounter); "matter" as a verb (noun is fine)
**Pronoun rule:** Always "we" throughout — this is co-authored with Enrico Terrone. Never "I". Claude keeps making this mistake; correct on sight.
**New source acquired (March 25):** Bengson (2015) "The Intellectual Given," *Mind* 124, pp. 707-760. Downloaded to `Learning/generating-philosophy/The Intellectual Given by John Bengson 2015.pdf`. Also saved to Readwise Reader. Extracted to `/tmp/bengson_2015.txt`. This is the paper where Bengson argues intuitions are "presentations" (same type as perceptions) that provide justification without requiring it. Distinct from the Bengson, Cuneo, Shafer-Landau (2022) methodology book already in the project sources.
**Next steps (updated March 31):**
- Section 1: Fix Putnam paragraph transition (%%comment%% from Nick — reader will be confused by abrupt shift to Putnam). Check whether detail was lost from the Putnam paragraph during Watson/Crick removal.
- Introduction: Fill in roadmap (currently placeholder).
- Section 3: Incorporate Enrico's March 31 feedback (Einstein after Moore/Putnam, continuum, secondhand experience, "according to Zahavy" attributions, Pigliucci sentence structure fixes). Still needs complete structural overhaul per March 24.
- Machery: Role still under reconsideration (March 25 checkpoint).
- Source verification: Dellsén dependence relations (add negative case), Twin Earth description, Gaut 2010 fn. 23, Lipton italics.
