# 0. Introduction - it is common to begin aesthetics papers with a remark about the aesthetics of X being surprisingly. Understudied --- # 1. Functional Beauty vs. Typography ## 1. Functional Beauty and Typography According to Carlson and Parson’s Functional Beauty account, knowledge of what a thing is for enters perception and thereby shapes aesthetic appreciation. They frame this as the *Problem of Translation*, writing that the task is to explain how "knowledge of that function can play a role in our perception of, and hence our aesthetic appreciation of, that object" (Parsons & Carlson, 2008, p. 90). They then use Walton's category machinery: once an artefact is perceived under a functional category, its non-aesthetic features are seen as standard, variable, or contra-standard, and that ordering of features in perception shapes which aesthetic qualities are available in experience. On this view, functional beauty consists in category-structured perceptual uptake; a knife can look fit for function in cutting because understanding how the object works structures how those features look. A knife lying idle on a board looks no different from a knife mid-cut. The edge geometry, blade profile, and handle balance — the features that constitute its appearance of fitness — remain visually present whether or not cutting is taking place. What this suggests is that looking fit for function is a distinct phenomenon from the phenomenology of functioning itself. When I cut with a knife, there is an experience to the cutting: the resistance of the material, the feel of the blade passing through, perhaps sound. But none of that is what we mean by the knife *looking* fit. The appearance of fitness concerns static visual properties, available in perception whether the knife is in use or at rest. Parsons and Carlson's account supports this reading. On their view, "looking fit" is an aesthetic quality that emerges when an object is perceived under a functional category, with no contra-standard features present and functionality-indicative variable features visible to a high degree (2008, pp. 95-96). The relevant uptake turns on how features are perceived under that category — not on what the object is presently doing. A knife at rest can look just as fit for cutting as a knife in action. A typeface's function is to be read. Reading is not something that happens after or in addition to perceiving the text; the perceiving just is the reading. When you read a sentence, the activity you perform is the visual processing of the letterforms on the page. There is no further step in which the typeface's function is carried out, no moment at which a different kind of engagement begins. For the knife, edge geometry indicates cutting capacity: the geometry is one thing, the cutting another, and we perceive the first as suited to the second. For typography, there is no such gap. The visual properties of letterforms do not indicate reading capacity; they constitute it. Readability is not something the shapes point toward but a property of the shapes themselves. Parsons and Carlson's notion of "looking fit" requires that visual features be indicative of a functional capacity distinct from those features — for the knife, edge geometry is indicative of cutting without being cutting. For a typeface, to "look fit for being read" is simply to be readable. There is no capacity beyond the appearance to which the appearance might be suited, no distance between the indication and what is indicated. --- # 2. Typographic Interdependence # 2. Typographic Interdependence If typographic beauty is not functional beauty — if there is no gap between the perception of form and the exercise of function — then what is it? Typesetting is a form of weaving. Bringhurst writes: > The typesetting device, whether it happens to be a computer or a composing stick, functions like a loom. And the typographer, like the scribe, normally aims to weave the text as evenly as possible. Good letterforms are designed to give a lively, even texture, but careless spacing of letters, lines and words can tear this fabric apart. > ... > And color depends on four things: the design of the type, the spacing between the letters, the spacing between the words, and the spacing between the lines. None is independent of the others. > (Bringhurst, 2004, p. 25) At the level of letter construction, "space and letter-shape must therefore be considered as interdependent parts" (Hill, 2023, p. 6). The space between letters is a 'function' of their interior spaces: smaller counters require tighter spacing (Hochuli, as cited in Hill, 2023, p. 15). Or as Hill puts it directly: "The interior space of a letter is closely interdependent with the spacing it requires" (ibid., p. 20). You cannot settle the shape of a letter without also settling the space it demands; adjusting one requires adjustment of the other. The interdependence does not stop at the letter. Hochuli's "sufficient close fit" shows "the interdependence of letter-space with word-space" (Hill, 2023, p. 26). Typeface weight and openness determine optimum word spacing, which in turn informs leading (ibid., p. 35), and leading itself varies with line measure and page layout (ibid., p. 38). At the level of composition: "Longer measures need more lead than short ones. Dark faces need more lead than light ones" (Bringhurst, 2004, p. 37). No single variable can be settled on its own; each pulls the others with it. A dark typeface set at a long measure with the same leading that served a light face at a short measure will produce a dense, airless page — not because the leading value is wrong in isolation, but because it no longer fits the configuration of variables around it. Tracy, quoted by Hill, describes the design process: > "The fitting of the alphabets is best done when the letters have been sketched but before they are finished, because the fitting process may require adjustments of the character widths". This affirms that a fully integrated process of type design involves interdependent decisions over letter profile and the surrounding space, in which each may be modified by reference to the other. > (Tracy, as cited in Hill, 2023, p. 16) Whether a given leading value, or word-spacing value, or letter-spacing value counts as *good* depends on what the other variables are doing. The same twelve-point leading that gives a light face at a short measure room to breathe will crowd the lines of a dark face at a long measure; the same word spacing that maintains continuity for one typeface will produce visible holes for another. There is no evaluative fact about any single variable taken by itself — only evaluative facts about the relations between variables. If this is right, typographic assessment cannot be additive. We do not evaluate counter shape, letter-spacing, word-spacing, leading, and measure as independent contributions and then sum them; we evaluate whether these factors hang together as mutually constrained choices. Typographic value consists in fit among interdependent parts. --- # 3. Fittingness # 3. Fittingness I want to argue that typographic beauty consists in what Cochrane calls *fittingness* — the mutual probability of an object's parts. He defines it as follows: > We find something fitting when parts appear mutually probable, and the more mutually probable parts there are, the better. Another way to put this point is that we find things beautiful at the moment we realize that they contain patterns that will allow lots of details to be reconciled or predicted. > (Cochrane, 2021, p. 8) Beauty, on this account, appears when an object offers rich structure at manageable cognitive cost — what Cochrane calls "cognitive bargains" (ibid., p. 9): objects that seem to offer efficient informational uptake because their details form a coherent pattern. The interdependence described in Section 2 is not a defect in typography to be managed after the fact; it is the condition under which fittingness can be perceived at all. Where there is no interdependence, there is nothing for the parts to be fitting *with*. At the level of letterform, fittingness appears as what typographers call elegance. The counter of an 'o' establishes a particular openness; the 'n' counter echoes it at a different proportion. Stroke weight modulations — the transition from thick to thin — follow a logic that, in a well-designed face, appears to grow from a single underlying principle rather than from a series of independent decisions. Serifs finish the strokes in a way that seems continuous with them, not attached to them. What makes this elegance rather than mere technical competence is the phenomenological character of the perception: the internal relations among counter, stroke, serif, terminal, and surrounding space appear *necessary* rather than accidental, as though changing any one element would require changing all the others. That appearance of mutual necessity is fittingness at the micro level. Fluency is fittingness at the level of the text block. When the "design of the type", letter spacing, word spacing, and line spacing are co-ordinated (Bringhurst, 2004, p. 25), the reader's eye moves through the text without snagging — each line ending leads to the next line beginning, each word space separates without interrupting, the leading provides enough vertical clearance that lines remain distinct without drifting apart. The experience is one of continuity and ease, and it is produced not by any single variable but by the co-ordination between them. When this co-ordination fails, "careless spacing of letters, lines and words can tear this fabric apart" (ibid.). Fluency, like elegance, consists in perceivable fit among interdependent parts. Badly co-ordinated typography is not merely bland — it is positively ugly. Cochrane writes: > I propose that at least a central kind of ugliness is where we detect the breaking of pattern—where order is spoiled, or where the object simply seems messy or poorly articulated. This is not merely the absence of beauty (which would be bland) but a positive quality of ugliness. In engaging with such objects we might try and fail to grasp pattern, resulting in a sense of error and confusion. > (Cochrane, 2021, p. 13) A local misfit at one level — spacing too loose for the counter width, say, or leading too tight for the measure — can force compensations elsewhere. Tightening letter spacing to offset wide word spaces may produce collisions between characters; increasing leading to relieve cramped lines may disconnect the page's vertical rhythm. Each compensatory move addresses one tension while creating another, and where those compensations do not restore coherence, the page presents itself as a series of local accommodations that never resolve. When typographic interdependence breaks down, the reader encounters exactly the "noisy or distorted" appearance Cochrane describes (ibid.) — not mere absence of beauty but the positive presence of misfit. Elegance and fluency, then, are not different aesthetic properties that happen to co-occur in good typography. They are the same evaluative property — fittingness among interdependent parts — perceived at different scales: elegance names the fit within the letterform, fluency names the fit across the text block. The apparent divide between them is a scale-shift within a single evaluative structure, and typographic beauty consists in perceivable fittingness across these levels of organisation. --- # 4. Convention and Scope # 4. Convention and Scope One might object that this account collapses beauty into utility. I do not think it does. The question about utility is whether the typography enables a task; the question about beauty is whether the parts are organised in a way that appears mutually necessitated. A typeface can be perfectly readable — high utility — while its parts fail to cohere: the letter spacing serviceable but unrelated to the counter rhythm, the leading adequate but arbitrary relative to the measure. Fittingness is compatible with functional contexts without being limited to them. Cochrane says that judges can experience reward when the object's parts appear "mutually probable" under a functional description (Cochrane, 2021, p. 9), while insisting that his model can "encompass the beauty of phenomena understood non-functionally" (ibid., p. 10). Typographic beauty can be function-sensitive without being reducible to successful task completion. A second concern is transparency. If good typography recedes from attention, where is the beauty supposed to be? But beauty does not require focal attention directed at the beautiful object. Attending to the type as an object of scrutiny is one thing; the quality of experience that well-resolved type produces is another. A reader immersed in a novel is not attending to the typography — but the typography is shaping the character of her reading experience at every moment. The evenness of texture, the rhythm of the line, the absence of distracting gaps or collisions — these are not noticed as features of the type, but they are present in the quality of uptake. Typographers aim to weave text "as evenly as possible" (Bringhurst, 2004, p. 25), and failures of spacing tear the fabric apart (ibid.). What is transparent in successful reading is not the absence of structure but the presence of well-resolved structure whose effects are experienced without being thematised. The beauty is carried by the quality of uptake itself — by the fluency described in Section 3 — not by sustained attention to type as object. A third concern comes from display cases that seem elegant but disfluent for extended reading. I take these as refinements, not counterexamples. Given that elegance and fluency are fittingness at different scales, a design can achieve high micro-level fittingness — beautiful letterforms whose internal relations appear mutually necessitated — while failing macro-level fittingness for a given reading task, because the same features that produce elegance at the letterform scale (high stroke contrast, elaborate serifs, tight spacing) may disrupt the even texture that fluency requires. One can reasonably praise a typeface's letterform coherence and still deny that the same design is beautiful as continuous reading typography. There is no contradiction here: the levels of organisation are distinct, and fittingness at one level does not guarantee fittingness at another. A fourth concern is whether this account leaves room for convention. It does, but not as free-floating social preference. Hill describes reader expectation: > our user expectations of printed letters are still informed by historic norms. Letters originally created within the very limited kerning options offered by metal type were designed to provide a satisfactory result under less than ideal conditions of production and reproduction. The inter-character space we associate with these letters reflects the constraints of the technology in which they originated and is part of the design, not only for the designer but for the reader. > (Hill, 2023, p. 25) Hill adds that "User expectation is not of course fixed or absolute. It evolves" (ibid.). Convention, on this picture, sets moving regions of acceptable fit — the range of letter spacing that readers trained on metal-set text will experience as natural is different from the range that readers trained on phototype will accept, and both differ from the tolerances of readers habituated to screen typography. But within any such region, perceptual and formal coupling constrain what can count as stable fittingness. Convention shifts the window; it does not determine the structure of fit within that window. The account is neither rigidly naturalistic nor merely conventionalist. A final question is scope. I suggest a controlled extension to graphic design more broadly. In typography, the visual form constitutes the function rather than indicating a separate capacity. Where this is true elsewhere in graphic design, the gap between indication and what is indicated closes, and beauty consists in fittingness rather than in looking fit for a separate function. Consider data visualisation. In a well-designed chart, the visual arrangement of the data — the positions, colours, scales, and labels — is not a report of an understanding that exists independently; the viewer's understanding of the data *consists in* perceiving the visual pattern. Seeing the trend line, the cluster, the outlier, just is grasping what the data show. As with typography, there is no gap between the perception of form and the exercise of function. And the interdependence among variables parallels typographic interdependence: changing the colour palette may require adjusting the grid density; altering the axis range reshapes which patterns are visible; label placement depends on data density. Where these variables are well co-ordinated — where the parts appear mutually probable — the visualisation achieves a fittingness analogous to typographic beauty. The extension is conditional: it needs case-by-case argument, not universal application. But typography is not an isolated case. Typographic beauty consists in fittingness among interdependent parts across levels of organisation, and the apparent divide between elegance and fluency is best understood as a scale-shift within that single structure.
