>Plato suggested that humans delight in imitation (Republic: Book 10). Imitation is an interesting concept because it involves at least two things: the imitator and the imitated. Plato also thought that pictures imitate the appearances of things, and that their charm was rooted in how well they accomplish that end. Perhaps pictorial realism involves comparing what is depicted with the artifact that depicts it along these lines. Perhaps, that is, pictures generally resemble their objects, and very realistic pictures very much resemble their objects.
