\I've been thinking about [[what sort]] of unique experience VR can offer. I also want to see whether we can relate it to aesthetics . We can think about other art forms such as film building on art forms that have gone before them such as theatre. Theatre has the audience members in fixed positions on relation to the scenes. A film allows for different shots from different points of view, and this can change in an instant: it enables the viewer to have a new sort of experience. Does VR provide users with a new type of experience? If it does, [[what sort]] of new experience type is it? Tavinor # [[Environmental Aesthetics]] One idea that seemed interesting to me is that VR allows for emersion in an environment that they know is *authored* . As far as I know no one working in analytic [[environmental aesthetics]] seems to think that a belief in an author, God, or *pretending* there's an author figures much in our appreciation of the natural world . I'd be surprised if this didn't turn up in [[environmental aesthetics]] from a religious perspective . There have been various ways of trying flesh out how we aesthetically appreciate nature. They can be found in Chapter 1 of [[Aesthetics and the Environment]] by Carlson # VR and Twofoldness ![[VR and Twofoldness]] # The Draft Link to the draft abstract (1500) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-jvcAKja_mGNPCIh3yuEMegjYIZkEmFO/edit - How would I change this draft? ## Part 1 ### The [[aesthetic specificity]] of VR - Introduce [[the question]]: if VR brings something new to to the table then... ### [[Tavinor and Twofoldness]] (d) by directing our attention to the medium itself - but it is not very convincing - phenomenology of twofoldness is not obvious - physiology is quite different *Maybe go into details this to set things up for later* ## Part 2 ### Comparison to [[the Aesthetics]] of the [[Installation Art]] ### Comparison to [[the environmental aesthetics]] We might think that VR is unique in that it gives us an authored environment ![[[[[[[[Aesthetics and the Environment]]]]]] by Carlson#^d584b2]] Thought of this way we might say that the [[aesthetic appreciation]] of VR is similar to the [[aesthetic appreciation]] of the environment in that they are both emersive ### VR and Experience
