# Analog Representation and the Parts Principle > [!ABSTRACT]- ABSTRACT Analog representation is often associated with the engineering distinction between smooth and discrete systems. This paper argues that analog representations facilitate a pattern of interaction, namely open-ended searches for content across different levels of abstraction.
